I want to thank everyone who offered information and advice about my well pump problem. With your help I got the system going. The faulty part turned out to be the capacitor in the pump motor control box.

After flushing the line just before the pressure tank until the water ran clear, I opened the gate valve to the supply side and discovered that the underground line is clogged.

The clogged line appears to be a fairly short run of that coiled black poly pipe buried under the trailer, connected to 1/2" galvanized steel pipe which comes up out of the ground and tees off to the hose faucet on one side and a gate valve to the supply line into the building on the other. I ran enough tests to be certain that the clog is in this section.

I can clear the line, replace some of it (I'd guess that the clog is at the poly to steel connection or in the steel,) or replace all of it. Obviously, the less I have to do, the better. I'd be glad to hear about any methods of clearing a supply line, even bizarre ones. I've cleared hundreds of drain lines but never a supply line that I can remember.

I got it cleared. Thanks for all the good advice and useful information. I made up a fitting that went from a 1/2" nipple which I hose clamped into the poly supply line to a 1-1/2" nipple which I put one of those expanding rubber bladder devices into. It was my (apparently mistaken) belief that those things pulse water at increased pressure into the line. That did nothing. Then I took off that fitting and snaked the line with fish tape. It wouldn't make the 90 degree turn underground where the line connects to the 1/2" galv pipe which comes out of the ground. I took the fitting off that pipe and fish taped from that end but still no go. I ran a 3/8" rod with the end filed like a screwdriver blade down the pipe, turning as I went down. When I took it out I had managed to stop the flow altogether. On the plus side though, I noticed that the rod was wet for 24" and the pipe was sticking out of the ground 16". About an hour after removing the first shovelful of earth, I was packed up and driving home---and the flow of water at the trailer has never been better.

I knew before I started working on this problem that if I ended up digging down to the obstructed fittings, everything I had done prior to that would be wasted effort. But measuring the depth of the poly line by the height of the water on a rod inserted into the vertical steel pipe was something I noticed, not something I thought of in advance. There's a world of difference between taking apart and putting together steel fittings in a 12" deep hole and doing so in a 28" deep hole. Anyway, this was one of the few times in my life I've had a chance to work on an outdoor plumbing problem when it was dry and warm and there was plenty of light and no urgency. I'd have been a fool to not drag out a job like that.

I don't know what kind of pump you have, but a couple of years ago, I had capacitor troubles with my Grundfos 1 horse submersible. It went through 3 new capacitors and I thought I would have to replace the whole pump setup to fix it. My buddy is a pump man and he suggested I try a different control box before I pulled the pump. He also happened to have a used take-out control box that he gave me.

I took that control box home and installed it--about 1 hour of work. The pump has worked fine ever since. Obviously there was something wrong inside the control box.

I read the earlier posts and would have bet that a new water pressure operated switch would have solved your problems. I have had them go out a couple of times, over the years, sometimes because the pressure chamber fills with gook, sometimes because the points get too bad. I now keep a new one on hand, ready to install. That only takes a few minutes to do, the way my system is set up. But I once went without water for 3 days, because I couldn't find a new switch over a holiday.

Pumps do wear out, especailly if they are not pumping completely clean water. I pump a little sand and some silt, and my water has a rust problem. My pump will not put out nearly the volume it once did. I suspect that the impellers in the multi-stage submersible pump are worn. It still works, but I probably am using a lot more electricity to get the amount of water I am pumping. I plan to replace the pump in the next year or so with a somewhat smaller pump, since my well also has volume issues in late summer. But I will keep the old pump as a spare.

Good luck cleaning out your clogged pipe. If I was going to do it, I would start at the joint to the galvanized pipe. Once I got it apart, I would see if the water would flow well from the plastic pipe. I have had small galvanized pipe almost close off from rust at a fitting. It cleaned right up with a jack knife once I found the problem and got it apart. If that was not the problem spot and the water didn't flow much from the plastic pipe, I would start with a hooked coat hanger or other heavy wire into the end of it. If that didn't come up with anything I would try an electician's fish tape. If the pipe is the thin, really flexible type, you could have a rock pinching it nearly closed. The fish tape should help you figure out where to dig.

I have messed with well systems all my life. But usually I have had troubles when it was darn cold outside and it was a real pain to do the work. It is pretty hot here and so is probably also so around OLY, but at least you don't have to worry about pipes freezing. Hope you get it working right soon. Good luck!

Hi Stan,

About the only thing that should plug a supply line is algie growth and chlorine will take care of that, in fact you should heavy chlorine the system for 24hrs as it's been sitting for such a long time.

Most health departments require 1gal of chlorax in the well bore then pumped until you can't smell chlorine on wells that have been not used for awhile. You can get a high bacteria count from stale well water.

I guess if you were in a heavy iron area then you would get a scale build-up at the galvanized connection that will probably need the pipe replaced.

Vinegar disolves rust plus will sweet'n the water. Takes about 48hrs to work.

The problem probably is a galvanized adapter into the poly. Non-metallic adapters are available. I have quit using any metal other than stainless steel in any plumbing piping.
