Hooked up a new garbage disposal, but there were no instructions. Pigtail I wired to it is 2 wire gray insulation with a ribbed wire and a smooth wire. I hooked the ribbed wire to the black wire in the disposal. It works fine but now I wonder if it"s OK. Someone said the wide plug/ribbed side needs to be neutral/white. I don"t want the house to burn down, but again it seems to be working.

just to add, when mixing electric & water, you really really need that third wire, the ground wire. If your wall outlet doesn't support a ground, you need to go all the way back to the breaker box to supply one. It's important.

Do exactly what Dave OR says in his post. Get the proper type cord to start with.

Unplug the lamp cord pigtail you used initially, disconnect it from the disposal, and throw it away.

Two-wire pigtails are for light-duty, double-insulated portable appliances and tools, (and some kinds of light fixtures), not for a heavy-duty high load permanently mounted item like a garbage disposal, especially when you consider that it is in a high-shock-hazard area like a sink.

Now go buy a proper 3 wire heavy-duty pigtail. It should be 12 or 14 AWG, should have a sturdy separate outer outer insulating cover, and have a black, white, and green wire. Make sure the ground terminal on your garbage disposal receptacle is actually a good ground.

Install the correct pigtail, matching the wire colors and ensuring that the green wire is connected to the ground terminal on the disposal.

Purely from an electrical standpoint those little motors are not polarity sensitive. You CAN wire them either way. HOWEVER!!! some are wired with the neutral connected to the chassis and if you reverse the connection the hot wire is now connected to the sink. SHOCK LAND.
Connect the GROUND WIRE to a proper ground. That"s why the ground was added to the wire bundle years ago to cover hot/neutral turnovers.

Ribbed is supposed to be the neutral or white wire. Take a look at your lamps cords. You will see that one side is ribbed and it connects to the neutral side.

Yes the ribbed/white wire should be connected to the White/Neutral wire. Do you have a third wire ground (green/case) wire hooked up ?
The safety of having the hot and neutral wire reversed sort of depends on the devices construction. I would make them right though and hook up the 3rd wire ground as well if you have not already done this.
Be safe.
