I'm in the process of installing 18 used florescent light fixtures in my shop. I am checking each one over prior to mounting/wiring it. I'm sure I'm gonna need to replace some ballasts. Where do you folks buy yours? I have not done any checking around yet.

Thanks, Glenn F.

Hello,
I have 8 foot Highoutput flourescent light fixtures in my workshop/polebarn. A power surge killed one of my ballasts, adn I had another that was going bad. They had lasted for almost 25 years. I found that the cost of a replacement ballast was slightly more than buying a whole new fixture. I ended up buying and installing two new fixtures. It was especially nice becuase the new reflectors are far nice than my old ones and reflect the light much better. They encourage people to replace the fixture by pricing the ballast alone so high. It makes sense, if it"s going to go another 20 years, better to replace all the components. The only reason they sell ballasts by themselves are for those who really don"t want to do the work of changing the fixture (which isn"t that hard). If you have any bad ballasts, consider new fixtures. I purchased mine from Grainger.com

Electrical Supply Houses. Get Class P , Thermally Protected. In TN. that is the only kind you can use.

I see them at home centers, hardware stores, and electrical supply houses. Be sure and match your lamps.

Hi Glenn,

You should be able to buy them anywhere you can buy fixtures and tubes, they're not exotic. You might want to look for the words "Contains no PCB's" on the old ballasts, and consider replacing them if they don't say that even if there are no other apparent problems. I did have an old ballast in my kitchen fail and put out a lot of smoke. I was glad to read that phrase on it when I took it down. My understanding is that whether you breathe the smoke from burning PCB's or not, you'll eventually die. My wife thinks I don't take these things seriously enough.

Depending on how you plan to use the lights, you might also want to think about something other than plain vanilla ballasts. They also come in rapid start, low interference, etc.

All the best, Stan
