I'm in the market for a new saw, my 630 Jonsred is about wore out, any advice on which is the best saw to replace it with, need at least a 20" bar use it for firewood mainly. would like to keep the weight down but would like something that won't bog down when I lean into it. thanks

Thanks to everyone responding to my question about which saw to buy, looks like stihl is the way to go. Actually I wouldn't have to replace my 630, but I had a tree by the fenceline I wanted down and was going to hook a cable on it to pull it down when my brotherinlaw showed up, he's a semi professional logger, no problem he says I'll just hang the tree on this corner and it'll fall into the pasture. needless to say it didn't it landed on my fence and a limb hit my saw, fortunately I moved the pickup. And with the price of parts to fix it it's cheaper to buy a new one unless I find one for parts. thanks again.

You know i decided i needed to replace my dads old yellow chain saw, it was 16" about 30 lbs. I dont use one much but when i do i cut down trees, clean fence rows, trim trees make fire wood or what ever. I just looked thought the sunday paper flyers, found a poulan on sale at farm and fleet, 18" 40cc motor came with a case and an extra chain for $140. it has some purple and green and is called "wild thing" it looked nice and ist heavy so i though with bean prices low and corn prices still not very high that this saw would do everything i wanted for a few years so why not. I used it today and wow i just love it, course anything is better than what i had.

I used to help my granpa sell firewood. He bought a new Husky. It was a good saw but just lasted about 300 ricks. Went and bought a new 029 and the bar on it outlasted the Husky by 250 ricks. Makita makes a good chainsaw also(they bought out Dolmar).

after years of working on my two poland pro 305's every 2 hours, i finally purchased a stihl 029 farmhand 20". why did i wait so long? some say 20" is long for firewood, but i needed it for downed trees on fences.

I used a poulan for awhile but got sick of the bogging down or stalling when the gas is alittle on the old side(about a month)Then I got a stihl 025 and It is great. The power is just right along with the weight. The 025 is the best new tool I have ever had And remember according to the dealer "Stihls remove wood not cut it."Good luck

Good gosh, how did you wear out a chainsaw on firewood and what the heck is 20" for?

I've been standing behind an 024 Stihl for some time. It's just right on power vs. weight. I ran an 032 some and it was a bit hefty, but surely had the power.

I have friends who swear by Dolmar and Husky, but I have no direct experience.

Stihl, Olympik, and Dolmar are good, not sure of the last two's prices. Huskys and Jonsereds are almost as good but overpriced. Partner is supposed to make good chainsaws but I don't know much about them. Their demo saws seem to be on the weak side.

I have a Stihl 032AV and a Homelite Super XL-924 that I got at a yard sale for $10 each. Now, I can't believe you guys are talking about how heavy an 029 is. My Homelite is a 24", 5HP saw that weighs almost 25 lbs with a full tank. It's hard to carry around a lot, but you get to like the power when you start cutting. One of the last serious American saws. Anyway, the Stihl is much more refined. Nice quiet muffler (sounds like a Jap motorcycle), vibration isolation, lighter weight. I use the Stihl most of the time now, so I'm thinking of cannibalizing the Homelite to repair my XL-98 demo saw.

Well, that's about all the rambling I have in me for now.

Bought an 042 sthil at a yard sale last fall from a couple who found out firewood was not their bag. (not from around here), Gave their asking price, $75.00. heh heh. Probably had five cords of firewood put though it. Also have a 048 sthil with 20 inch roller tip bar. Saves the back but a little heavy. Yard saw. Whatever you do, buy the safety chaps and wear the ear protection.Grew up near Allagash, Maine cutting wood. Safety is a must. Good luck.

I have an 039 Stihl and an 021 Stihl. Fast cutting saws compared to my old Homelite SuperXL. The Homelite was reliable, and I didn't think it would ever wear out, but it died at age 25. Saws are like tractors - find the best established local dealer and buy his brand.

Let's see... 20" bar firewood saws

Husky and Stihl are the two most popular brands today and I have both a Husky 51 and Stihl 029AVE
'Super'.

Both have been completely reliable over years of service.

The Husky is lighter, but has more plastic and generally less fit and finish. The Stihl has a more pleasant exhaust tone.

Don't think you would go wrong with either of these mfg's.

I have run a stihl 034AV for over 16 years.I used it to cut about 10 cord of wood for about 10 years, now it just does some light cutting. All I did was keep the chain sharp, spark plug clean, new gas, and air filter clean.A few weeks back I took it to be serviced, He went throw it and said it was fine. Not even the fuel filter needed to be replaced.

I had Stihl 032 until 1993. Someone decided they needed it more than me. That and a bunch of my tools got stolen that year. I have owned a 029 since 1994. It is one heck of a cutting machine but is pretty heavy for me.

Been running the same Echo for 20 years, gone thru a few chains, and the bar is getting close to needing replacement, probably 4 spark plugs used. Worst thing I can say about Echo, the gas tank lasts too long between cups of coffy.

Hi Gene, I have a 26 year old Poulan, and a Stihl I bought several years ago. The Poulan has been used a lot and has required nothing more than routine service and repairs. In addition to general use, the Stihl was used to clear several acres of woods, and has gone through 40 to 50 gallons of gas since new. It has had one spark plug, one new bar, and a few chains. The Stihl seems to weigh a little more than other saws the same size, but it is very rugged. My friend who sells and repairs saws, mowers, etc., says Stihl saws are the best. Hope this helps...Al English

'Nother vote for Stihl here. I've run Huskys, Jonsereds and Poulan, and the Huskies are good but overpriced around here, Jonsereds are WAY overpriced and heavy, and I wouldn't give you a nickle for every Poulan ever built.

I am a conscienous person that abides by the rules when it comes to maintaining my saws and having clean properly mixed new gas. My fairly new but out of warranty Husky (20" and with the original chain) recently failed me while cutting a large ash tree. Piston seized to cylinder wall. The repair was to be too expensive and I elected to buy a new appearing Stihl (20") at the pawn shop for less than the repair bill for parts for the Husky. With the Stihl, I completed the task started by the Husky and I am impressed with the cutting and improved cranking of the Stihl. I have another smaller Husky that when the time comes will be replaced by a Stihl. I am not devoted to any brand but I do quickly sour when I have a problem that occurs without justification.

Personally, I like Husqvarna (Huskys) -- but, Stihl is also an excellent saw. Poulan makes some excellent commercial saws, but their consumer saws are pretty lightweight these days. My suggestion is to visit Madsen's Online out of Centralia, Washington -- in the heart of the northwest logging region. As far as chainsaws go, it's my opinion they're the best logging supplies dealer in the U.S.

Have had good luck with 455 poulan pro (orange not green), rather heavy but can handle the big stuff.
