Need to do a couple of small roofing jobs soon. Do I need a roof nail gun or a gun that shoots staples work? The staple guns seem cheaper to buy. If they work, what size staples would you buy? The roof is 1/2 inch pressboard. I read in archives people seem to like Bostitch brand. Would the Harbor Freight guns get me by to do a couple smaller roofs? Thanks

Stapeling shingles on is not allowed per codes in many areas. Check your local codes. I had a house in FL that had a stapeled on roof, many of the staples worked their way back up an started leaks. I know for a fact that stapeled on roof was much easier to rip off than a nailed one that I replaced it with.

Thanks everybody. I would just do the roofing by hand but this particle board is so cheap I'm half afraid to pound on it. I didn't realize it would be so cheap. I'll stick with the galvanized nails seems to be the way to go. Last roof I put on the garage by hand turned out real nice but killed my knees and back. Hope to minimize time up there working. Thanks for your input. I appreciate all your help. Bob

Hi Bob,

In my experience the only way you can get a worse roof than to use staples on 1/2" oriented strand board is to use staples over OSB on a second or third roof. I'm not keen on the smooth roofing nails you get in the coils, or loose from building supply places if you don't take the time to look for hot dipped galvanized nails.

I recently left a job at a complex of ten year old buildings where roofs had failed and allowed leaking in units in nine different buildings. Staples over 1/2" OSB and cheap roofing. What a combination!

All the best, Stan

Used to work on a lot of roofs. Both staples and coil guns will hold your shingles. I'd go ahead and get a gun, but then, I don't like being on a roof any longer than I have to, so hammering is out! The coil nailers will be cheaper in the long run and the "cheapee" will work fine as long as you take care of it.

I bought one of the cheap Tool Shop brand coil roofing nailers a little over 5 years ago. I've used it on several buildings and loaned it out a few times. As long as you keep it oiled it works great. I use to use a roofing stapler when I worked in a mobile home factory. IIRC it used 1-3/4" wide X 7/8" long galvanized staples. Both seemed to hold the shingles well. Just make sure your air pressure is adjusted right to set the fastner properly. Make sure that whatever type you decide to use that the fastners are galvanized.

For small roofs I would just nail by hand. But maybe I am one of the few that still remembers how to hammer. LOL Staplers won't hold. Alot of expense to go to for just some small roofs. I personally think hand nailing gives you a better roof.
