If all else fails, save the webpages to the hard drive and print those pages when you're off the internet.

You may have an interrupt conflict, if you have a REALLY old PC. This would be an old ISA bus computer; I wouldn't expect that sort of problem with a PCI bus system.

How are you hooked up to DSL? Is it a DSL card or an external DSL modem connected via ethernet?

You might want to check the HP/Compaq website (hp.com) to see if there's a new printer driver for your printer under XP. (probably not, but check anyway)

Does the problem only occur when you print from your browser, or does it occur with other applications as well? (You might not notice if your connection gets dropped when you print from Word, for example.) If if only happens from the browser, I'd try switching browsers (to Firefox, for example) and see what happens.

Sounds like it is an older pc that is using a usb to ethernet adapter.. and he is hooking the dsl up there.. thus bottlenecking at the usb 1.1 / 1.0 speed in all likelyhood. Printing something from the web probably takes 100% of the bandwidth of the incoming line.. not to mentioon if he has other usb devices sharing bandwidth.. like extra hubs past the root, or mouse.. etc..

Guy,

When you "print something from the web", it isn't actually coming down your network connection. Assuming you're printing from the browser, the image has to be downloaded to your PC and rendered by the browser before it is transmitted to the printer.

Try this: bring up a page in your browser, disconnect your internet connection and hit Print. You'll find that it prints just fine.

I don't see how that changes anything i said?? If he is printing a large document, it is very possible that the bottlenecking of the (realitively slow ) uSB connection is getting choked. I've started printing long PDF documents thet were not even full loaded / downloaded.. thus not 100% spooled on my system.. etc.

Easiest fix is isolation. in reply to wh604, 07-20-2006 04:29:22
If possible, put a network card on that PC and run the cable from the DSL modem to that. That"s probably also your cheapest fix; you may even have a network port on the motherboard.

What operating system are you using (95, 98 ME 2000 XP) and what type of browser (netscape, IE, mozilla) are you using?

Is your printer USB? is your network adapter USB?

Do you have your printer spool turned on(enabled) ?

I'd say you are picking up some latency. if it is an older pc.. then it is likely usb 1.1..( or -gasp- 1.0 ) a realitively slower and possibly more latent connection.. depending on what other perif's you are using.

Printers that hog resources don't help the situation either.

If your internet connection on the USB is going thru a hub,.. then.. if you have 2 usb connectors on the PC.. then leave the hub in one connector, and then try moving the internet connection device instead to one of the USB connectors on the pc. Hub could be killing the throughput.
