Any one of the 6 volt to 12 volt converters will work but a suggestion. Why not convert the electrical system to 12 volts and everything from starting to lights will work better. Also parts will be more available. If he is trying to keep everything stock then find an old 6 volt radio.

During the CB fad of 20-30 years ago I did a few 12V neg ground CB radios into machines that were 6V pos ground, using a converter somthing like this. They seemed to work well. The neat thing is that they will switch both voltage and polarity to fit almost any situation.

Hi Dan,

Just series two 6v battery's then supply power to the radio. 6v+6v=12v so take a positive wire lead from the starting battery to the negitive post of Bat#2 then postive post of Bat#2 goes to the radio fuse, chassis ground the radio.

Here's one source. Be aware, though, it takes a fair amount of current from the 6-Volt system to make the conversion to 12-Volts, AND power the accessory.

Could he simply put a 12-Volt battery in the trunck, and charge it at night, or between "drives" of the car?

Sorry about that! I intended to post the link to Powerstream, and didn't get the clipboard cleared from another post!
