Just how many miles.

There are alot of old tractors out there. I was just thinking...an old tractor, cracked head, bad bearings(probably 4th to 5th set)how many sets of tires has the ole girl seen, steering wheel down to the steel, some dents from years past not intentionally inflicted, it used to be like a new baby...now there it sits...exhausted until some fine man comes along and breaths life and money back into it. Just how many miles can we bring back to it?... 10 hour days times 4-5 mph
equals 50 miles a day..times 65 years less some days it didnt run??? I just wish the tractor could tell a tale. It is just about all worn out. Kind of like the way I feel...

Just throwin a couple of pennys in here. My Explorer on the road shows a touch over 2 grand at 55mph. I had it up to aaaabout 92 and it was just over 3 grand. She has Overdrive on the tranny. Is four wheel with a V-6 four lt. I remember that 1800 was pretty hi on the 300 and 450 with those big buckets going up and down. Remember when they are runnin a belt or the PTO with a blower or hammer mill or a Gen set. All your car needs to run is the ALT. and Air condtioner. The air takes about 5hp and is about five tons as your house uses only two to three ton. Lots of ways to look at it. Jeffcat

I have had Farmalls that were wearing their original tires. I have a SC now that has corks in the unused bolt holes and I think that was done at the factory to keep dirt and such out. I am not so sure that a lot of these old tractors have a whole heck of a lot of hours or miles on them.

Something else you guys might want to consider is duty cycle. A 200hp car engine going down the road at 60mph is putting out 20hp. You can bet that tractor is putting out 75-90% of rated power most of its life. And the smaller ones probably work harder unless the big ones are on a really big farm.

I have done some figuring on this a while back. I came to the opinion that you would use about 30 MPH as the rule. Tractor with 5000 hours would be about like 150,000 miles. 100 hours on an oil change would be about like 3000 miles. Not a science, JMHO. Tom

There ain't nothing wrong with and old tractor that so TLC and some GREEN STAMPS WON"T FIX . Like old truck drivers never die they just get a new PETERBUILT.

I will put this in a little differant light. My dad used run a fertilizer business. He runs trucks that he would spread with. Most of them were worn/rusted out long before they had high mileage on them. We have a 1976 C65, that he bought new in 1976, he retired in 1996, the truck only has about 35-40,000 miles, but the engine has a lot of hours on it. He would go to the plant to get product, the be in the field for an hour spreading product, so it got a lot of hours, but not a lot of miles. I would reckin a tractor would be in the same type of thing with less highway miles.

Yea but, in auto talk. A moderate load might be equalant to about 50 MPH. So 10,000 hours would be about 500,000 miles

You would be hard pressed to find an auto that averaged 50 mph over every hour of it's existence. You can't even do that with an over the road semi.

I dunno...depends where you live and how you use it.

I used to commute 80 miles round trip, about 65 of which was @ 70mph on the Interstate, and another 10 miles where in 45mph zone although stop lights cut the average speed down there.

t'aint hard to see cars averaging about 50 mph from guys commuting from rural areas, over roads with minimal congestion :)

Put an hour meter on a car once and see if you can even come close to averaging 50 mph for every hour on the engine. This would include your winter warm up time, stop lights and any other idle time. Even the very small amount of time it takes you to drive through the gas station or mall parking lot adds up to a huge number over the life of a vehicle. You would be surprised just how many hours the motor racks up with the speedometer moving at a very slow rate or not at all.

Now when I travel from MD to SC it's a 530 mile trip and I can average around 60 mph portal to portal including time stopped for gas and restroom breaks. Then during the week we will rack up another 200+ miles of which we would be lucky to average 30 mph. Add up the round trip highway plus the around town and the entire trip averages about 51 mph. This is with 1060 miles at 75 to 80 mph on the highway and only 200 miles or about 16% of local driving. I'm not saying it's impossible, just highly unlikely. Maybe less than 2% of all autos will ever come close to a lifetime average of 50 mph for every engine hour.

720Deere, I think we might be comparing apples and oranges. Most times a tractor is run at rated speed(wide open). and the old girls typically were run 10-12-14 hours;(small equipment,etc.)to get the job done. Tractor = 1600 R.P.M. x 60 min.= 96000 R.P.Hour Auto = 2000 " x 60 min.= 120000 R.P.Hour In my car 2000R.P.M. = 60 M.P.H. ; ergo 96000 divided by120000 would equal 48 M.P.H. times 5000 hrs. equals 240000 miles. Open for debate but this is the way I've looked at it compared to over road trucks and overhaul times.

If a tractor is only capable of less than 18 mph than how in the world can support that logic. He asked how many miles the tractor would have traveled in it's lifetime not how many equivalent auto miles the engine has run.

You would be hard pressed to find an old tractor with more than 100,000 miles on it if you could measure such a thing. 20,000 hours @ 5 mph would only be 100,000 miles. Throw in road time to be generous and you're still less than 110,000 miles after 50 years and 20,000 hours.
