local snap on guy that comes by the shop has them, $180 or the set, they are pretty hard to find around here. Dont know if I ever saw a bonafide 8 point set at sears.

Sure, but a 12pt will work fine. Sears has 8pt with a lot of their sets.

Might fit if you drop the nut into the socket sure - but it won't actually 'work' for tightening or loosening the nut, just round it off.

Only accidentaly and if the square nut isn't on tight. Lots of squares are not fitted by 12 points at all and then only on the extreme corners. That makes them good at rounding off. And when its tight enough to need an impact wrench, a 12 point will round the corners instantly.

Yeah, any store that sells hand tools. Craftsman, Mac, Snap-on etc. They will be called 8 point or square sockets.
