O/T--Pellet Stove thoughts?

Really thinkin serious on a Pellet stove. I need to heat approx 2000 s/f., but still have the natural gas furnace to even things out if/when needed. I also have a small woodburner in the basement which I have heated with over the past few years, it does a good job...just need
a little more heat!

My questions---what do I look for? Should I look at a dual fuel (corn/pellet)?
Anything to stay away from?
Opinions on heating with Pellet stove?
Could I use my existing (6" triple wall stainless) chimney from my wood stove?

How many tons of pellets does one typically use in a year?

Brian yes there are some defenat things to stay away from some brands are junk you get what you pay for like anything else.

shoot me an e mail ([email protected]) glad to talk to you about pros and cons. been burning corn for a long time.

also corn burns hotter there for more btu"s for your money.and never burn corn in a stove built for pellets only corn burns so hot it will melt the burn pot ect.

Midwest Redneck when your U.S. Stove stove wont burn right have a friend with the fix kit for it he got it from a former designer that left there. also watch burning on high for long periods of time doors have a track record of warping.

I'm in Southwest Wisconsin. Put in a pellet stove last fall and ran it all winter. Love it. Used just over 2.75 tons of pellets over the winter to heat about an 1800 sq ft farmhouse. Don't have access to dried corn, so that wasn't an option. I have mine on a thermostat and it's set to around 70 degrees. I have my gas furnace set to 60 in case the pellet stove runs out and I'm not around I won't have stuff freezing. My gas bill, which is now mainly for hot water and cooking, averaged about $30 a month. Next project is an on demand water heater to push my gas bill even lower.

I just moved my corn/pellet stove into the house 2 weeks ago. I need to get it hooked up. I bought 2000 lbs. of corn and 4000 lbs. of pellets, I am still waiting for the pellets to arrive. (Yes get a dual fuel) I bought a US stove. I have been told by the HVAC company that sold me the stove that I will use 75 lbs. of corn per day. (I live in Michigan (southern part)) The pellets cost about 240/ton and corn is 140/ton or less as some guys here tell me.

Dual fuel or wish you had. A pellet/grain or pellet/coal gives you flexability with fuel prices and availability.

Brian look at the site burncorn.cas.psu.edu/ This guy at Penn State seems to have done a lot of research on pellet & corn stoves. If you have a way to store 100 to 200 bushels of shelled corn, thats the way I would go. I have an older model corn stove that I really like but it will not take dirty corn like some of the newer models. It is the fine cracks that cause the problems, not the bigger pieces. Also if they are close to you, they can make you turn up the TV a little. They do make a little noise.

go with a corn stove and if you do dont be cheap get a top of the line like a bixby have had several different brands in the family and it is by far the best.

you dont want to get stuck trying to get rid of a junk stove to up grade you just loose money.

I purchased a corn/pellet stove last year, I heated the entire winter on 100 bushel of corn, pellets here were scarce but as well as the corn works I would not trade for any other heat source. My house is 1600 sq. feet and I live in the Kansas City area, also I burned the corn right from the combine.

Ive got an Avanti I bought used for about $500. I use it durring the day in the back of my office. I like the stove , but it burns a little scooty, Im pretty sure you need a seperate chimney. Id rather burn wood if it were handy at this location.

I've got a Harmon pellet stove. I replaced my wood stove in the basement with it. Not as nice heat but still helps out greatly with my ranch type home in Sunny Southern Cecil County in Maryland. Only used about 2 tons last year, but have used as much as 5. Problem we had last year was finding pellets. Thing to do is get them in the summer and store them
