Trailer Spindles

I bought a shop built trailer that was built around 2 house trailer axles. The trailer has been used to haul a drag car from Florida to Michigan and it pulls perfectly.

Here's my question.....Where can I get replacement axle spindles that will allow me to replace the 14.5 tires, wheels and brake drums with more conventional automotive type wheels and tires and brake drums?

Or would it be easier to simply replace the entire axle assemblies?

Thanks,
Jerry B

I too have such a trailer. It only had brakes on 1 axle, so I went to a trailer sales and bought 2 complete axles w/brakes and wheels(15inch rims) for $125 each. The tires still have the nubs on them and the brakes look new. A welding shop shortened them both for $50. Tire dealers wanted about $90 each for new tires for the old 14.5 rims anyway.

I have to agree with ltf in nc. Agri-Supply is much cheaper than Northern and they are great folks. I get all my trailer stuff from them and they will ship to you.

We did excatly what you want to do and we went to the local Pioneer and Wheel and they fixed us us with spindles and we even bought wheels that matched the pick-up that we were using at that time. Hope this helps Jim

Demountable hubs and 865 hubs ( 8 bolt on 6.5" centres) are interchangeable, on trailer axles. The 865's can be bought as an assembly with bearings and seals, and fit the same 12" x 2" brakes. This would allow you to use 16" truck tires and rims if you have the clearance. I would not recommend cutting out spindles you'll never get them aligned again unless you have spindles machined specifically to fit the ID of the water pipe the axles are made of, and don't forget to grind the inside of the seam. Mobile home axles have a spindle that just plugs the end of the tube. When a set comes in I cut them up so that they never end up on the road again, as it's illegal to build trailers with mobile home running gear. The best solution would be to buy proper trailer axles IMHO.

Other hub options are 655 (6 bolt on 5.5" center for 15" wheels), and 855 with 9/16" studs, whereas the previous mentioned 865 have 5/8" studs.BFO

You do not have to buy spindles, only hubs. I will have to do some research but I know of a place that you can send the inner and outer bearings to and they will match a hub with the lug pattern you specify. I will post again when time permits.

Jerry,
Send an e mail to www.agri-supply.com and explain what you want to do. Acknowledge that this was discussed with them about three months ago and ask them what you need to do to accomplish the task. I have found these people to be responsive and their pricing has been more than competitive. I have no affiliation other than being a satisfied customer.

Hi Jerry, You can buy spindle stubs & hubs from Northern that are reasonable. Realigning the spindles will take some time but can be done.
