Bird nest in chimney

What do you do to keep birds out of a chimney? The shop has a wood burner with a 8" stove pipe going 12 feet straight up to the ceiling where it goes in to a stainless steel triple wall chimney that goes straight on up about ten more feet. It's capped with a round rain cap that the birds try to nest in. They have never been successful because the grass and stuff falls down into the chimney pipe but this summer the junk bridged part way down, so I had to pull the pipe down and remove about two feet of bird nest and four dead birds. A few years ago I wrapped the rain cap with chicken wire, which kept the birds out, but the next winter the wire frosted over when I had a low flame burning, which is most of the time. Going up there every spring to cover the chimney does not appeal to me. Thanks, Jim

I'd agree with Bill, get a store bought chimney cap to fit.
Meanwhile, you could do like I did and build the birds somewhere else to nest.

I've got a wire screen chimney cap/spark arrestor on my chimney, never had a problem with birds. All the big depot stores have them.

Well, being a kind of a tightwad, I hate to throw away a good chimney cap, maybe I can get it apart somehow and then line the inside with stainless hardware cloth. It might not frost shut if it's inside the cap. Yeah, I know, it'll probably cost me more than a new cap, but don't we all like to fix it ourselves? Thanks for the suggestions. Jim
