Here is a picture of a set of sockets. The driver side is shown. It is 6 sided. Was wondering what type of tool would drive this as I have never seen anything like this before. the other side are various sizes in a 12 point socket. The sockets had no identyfying marks except the size and a five pointed star.

I have a set like this that was given to me by my great uncle. There are about seven or eight sockets in a metal tray with a flip up top. A ratchet and a large allen wrench fit into the flip up top. The ratchet just has a place for the allen wrench to fit through; to reverse it, the ratchet is just turned over. I've had it since I was quite young and I think it's one of the neatest sets I've ever come across.

Here's a photo of the hex handled driver. Both ends have spring-loaded balls just like a ratchet handle has to retain the sockets. The 90° end has two small protrusions (can't be seen well in the photo) that prevent a socket from being inserted too far onto the handle.

And the whole set slides onto the long end of the handle for storage. Of course the one you need is the last one next to the bend!!

I have a set like that. They look like my vintage Indestro set... the used a hex-shaped drive as opposed to today"s standard square drive.

I have most of a set of Indestro sockets like that too. They were given to me by a friend in the mid 60's and they were old then. The ratchet quit working, but I have used the sockets with the other drive tools. I don't think I ever broke one of those sockets, which I sure cannot say about my Craftsman sets I got later.

I suspect that the 6 sided drive sockets were a bit cheaper than the 4 sided drive ones to make. But for whatever reason, the square drive became standard. I don't think I have ever seen a hex drive ratchet for sale new in a tool store.

I have seen several setss like that at flea markets. They came with an allen wrench to turn them.

Allen wrench or hex head in reply to DaveTx, 07-10-2006 18:54:44
would drive sockets like those. I've got some old Bonney sockets that use a hex head driver.
