Where is a good place to buy a GOOD wooden handled post hole digger? I inherited a cheap one from my dad. He used to have an old one that worked great. I think it was because it was made of iron and was quite heavy. The new ones seem to be sort of light weight.

The big box stores sell tools "built to a price". If you want some really good post hole diggers go to an elictrical supply house (where electrical contracters buy supplies) they'll sell you a set that your grandkids will eventually fight over.

Thanx for the replies. I'll look around at the stores mentioned. I also saw on e-bay where they're selling just the scoop (old one made of iron) I may buy and put some handles on it. If Home Depot or Ace (M &D) have a nice one I'll probably buy there.

Dave,

The best thing I have found for dry dirt and dirt with rocks and roots in it is a heavy steel bar flattened and sharpened on one end to dig in the dirt. Then I use the cheap hole diggers. Rod is about 1 1/4 inches in diameter and has a round flattened head that is good for packing around the post. They are for sale at Lowes and Home Depot.

Sounds like what I call a Iron Digger, I've dug many a hole with them on the farm. They work great and there just about industricable...The best thing that I've found is to use the iron digger to bust up the hard ground, then use the post hole digger as a scoop to remove the lose soil. Then back at it with the iron digger, only bad thing is there not the lightest things....:( But the do work!

Dave,
Dont know exactly where in Texas you are...but down here I saw a very heavy duty set a while back in a locally owned store called M&D supply, now mind you they were HEAVY and had a HEAVY price, $60.00 but they looked and felt like they would last a lifetime. Check around in locally owned stores in your area, maybe able to find what you want....

You can have my Fiskars pole hole digger...

When you pry it from my cold, dead hands :)

I think I bought this at Home Depot, but I don't see it on their website now.

Oh well, Fiskar's site has a link on it to buy one mail order.
