My bush-hog shaft got into the bottom of the body of the implement, and creased the outer sleeve about 6" from the end of the shaft; now it wont move in and out. Anyone have a suggestion on an options to repair?

Best Regards,
Rob

Hi Robert, I would make a slide hammer out of pipe in bolt together halfs, slide the hammer onto the shaft, heat the crease with oxy/act until dull red, then slide hammer the end off. That should straighten the outside sleave and may not have damaged the inside splines.

You may have to make a inside over sized driver to finish the outside shaft if damaged very bad by using the above process. If you keep the heat to the damage area on one side, you will not have to retemper or heat treat the shaft.

You can also take the pto shaft off, chain it to a tree and pull it out with the tractor. But, if it is bent/twisted very bad, a trip to TSC for a new tube will solve it. They also sell the square shafting. To replace the tubing you need to grind the welds off just past the ID of the tubing and tap out the ends. It should be lathe true but if you are careful and get most of the wobble out before welding the new tube, you'll get by. It pays to keep the shaft well greased and then when this happens to you, the greasy shaft will come out easier instead of galling (read welding) to the mating part. Another thought , if the shaft is not too wobbly now, mow an acre or two with it and it might free up itself. L8R----Fred OH

Thanks for your suggestion and comments. This sounds like a good option, and I will try it. I have a 9-N Ford tractor, without draft control, and the implement raises too high. I will have to rig a limiter, of some type, to prevent this from happening again.

I did this too. I found that I caused the PTO shaft to get into the housing by lengthening the top link too much trying to hold the brushhog up off the ground. I then used chains to set the height. Now I am going to order a Zane Thang and try it.
