Where's the cheapest place on the internet to buy flap grinding discs? I bought some a the local welding shop and they were over $7.00 a piece. I figured someone has to be selling them cheaper. I found hmabrasives.com. They have some for $1.65 a piece if you buy 20. Has anyone ever bought stuff from them?

The local HF in Vineland NJ had 4 1/2 disks made for Dewalt for something like $1.60 each! I bought six just to have them. We have a wonderful toy store in south Jersey called Fazzios in Glassboro. Talk about the most woderfull boy toy store you could want! They sell a lot of Sait disks. I think I have purchased about a hundred of them there. I use the .045 disks that are VERY thin but BOY do they cut fast. Take care with them but they work great. Jeffcat

I've found that the Norton 4 1/2's and the same size cutting wheel ( real thin ) seem to really give you your moneys worth, I don't recall exactly what I paid, $4.00 each at the local welding supply house. I just completed a project where I used both of these extensively, mostly mild steel. Norton flap disks seem to be the same way, my friend across the street gets them from the same place, prefers the Norton brand for the money, not sure what he's paying.

I bought a set of dewalt drill bits and am really pleased with how they have performed, not an expensive set or high grade, but out of all the low cost sets I've ever had, these are the best, I use Rigid cutting/threading oil everytime when drilling mild steel, figured I'd mention this as some others liked their grinding wheels.

i bought my 4 1/2" grinder and a 10 pack of grinding disks from harbor freight and so far it has been a real workhorse. who knows how long it will last, though. the grinding disks do seem to wear down rather quickly.

Hi Hogman,

I go through lots of 4 1/2" and 7" grinding discs (not flap discs, though) and I'm not sure it's such a simple matter to determine where the best bargain lies. I buy and use large numbers of Harbor Freight 4 1/2" discs, and use up lots of SAIT 7" discs which the school furnishes. I can't compare them because I use them quite differently. Recently I put a 4 1/2" DeWalt disc on one of my grinders and used it as I normally would. It seemed to last a lot longer than a H/F disc. When I mentioned this to the head of the program, who thinks all H/F stuff is garbage, he said that the life span of the disc isn't necessarily the best test of its value. Abrasives that are too hard will last longer but may not move as much metal, so the real test of a grinding disc is how much work it will do over its life. You can probably get a fair idea of that without setting up too rigorous a test, but it has to be the thing you're watching. If all you're tracking is the number of minutes of the disc life, you might draw a conclusion that doesn't actually point to the best value.

Let us know what you find out. I'll bet that everybody who uses an angle grinder would like to know the answer to that question.

All the best, Stan

I've used HF 4" disks. They are very agressive and throw particles all over. Most of which I think are off the disk, and it has a very short life. I buy Gemini disks from Grainger for about $1.65 ea. They last several times longer than HF. Equivilent Norton are $6.25 ea. Never tried one. I found some .040 Metabo 6" cutting disks #55339 at a flea market for $1 each. I cut some sections out of an old car wheel that I could never do with a Sawzall or on a metal band saw. I couldn't believe how fast and smooth it cut. It just takes a good tight hold on the grinder to guide it straight thru the cut, otherwise it will break the edges of the disk.

This may sound silly but it worked for me. If you are doing two jobs that are close to being alike. At the end of both jobs you will have a pile of used disks. See how big the piles are. If you end up with 4-6 or 7-10 disks per job the cost is close but you can see the differance. This will show up even more with sanding disks. Jeffcat

I agree with Cliff

I"ve bought flap disc and grinding disc from Harbor freight for a buck a piece for grinders and 3 bucks a piece for flap disc and they don"t last one tenth as long as the more expensive ones...

I use Dewalt grinding disc and SAIT or other name grand flap disk with much better results... the cheap ones either load up or just melt away quickly... time and money wasted... spend a little more get better quality...

Easy test... buy one expensive flap disc and one cheap one and compare on the same material to see what you get....

later
John

For what it's worth whenever I've tried cheap grinding disks they always end up costing more than the name brand ones. I've gone to buying all Dewalt disks unless I can't find them and in my opinion they last enough longer than the cheap ones that they end up costing less.

Sometime in the past year, i bought a cutting disc for my air tool. It was made in Italy! And it has lasted way longer than any other discs, including some better ones. I can't read the name on the label any more, and can't remember where i bought it!
