OT Gas Gauge

I figured people who know tools would know how to fix my gas gauge of a 79 Chevy truck. I replaced the sending unit and gauge reads past the full mark even though the tank is probably at 1/4 full. I put a brand new ground wire on unit and cleaned the connection to frame good with sandpaper. Before I put the unit in tank I connected it up and worked the float up and down and needle on gauge worked. Now in the tank it doesn't work. Any ideas? Thank you. Bob

MBU and Allan- THanks for reply. It is wide open space in the tank for the float to operate so should be okay for movement. I'll try to trace wire from sending unit to dash/gauge and see if I can find anything on that end. It was a real pain to lower the tank for the new unit installation so hope to find something on the gauge end. Thanks Bob

Hmmm ...it works when the sender is out... Could the float be put in a little offside and is hanging up on the side of the tank?

Bob,

You've got an open circuit somewhere between the gauge in the dash and the ground from the sender to the frame.

Somewhere, she's not making contact.
