install bulk tank filter sideways?

I've always installed filters on bulk tanks the regular way meaning they hang down. I want to install an electric pump on a 100 gallon bulk tank in my truck and the only way to install filter that regular way would be to hang the filter and hose over the side of the tank.
I could, however, just turn the filter setup sideways and things would fit better. But the filter would be sideways. It would be a Hydrosorb II particulate and water filter.
I've never thought about this but any ideas if I can install sideways like that?

big marv is right, the water will go to the bottom, the filter needs to hang vertical to work right or the water will not fall out in the filter housing

Not sure what you are meaning here. The filter being discussed here is a spin on filter, very much like your car's oil filter, it does not have a drain petcock on it, if that is what you mean. It is designed to asorb the water into the filter media.

After throughly searching the Cim-Tek web site, I cannot find anything on filter mounting. I would email them and ask.

The way the Hydrosorb works, the "paper" of the filter element itself, asorbs and holds the water, much in the way that a baby diper retains water that cannot be squeezed back out of it, no matter what you do. Apparently newer versions are designed to allow water in solution to pass thru and only remove free water. I cannot see where it really would matter how the filter were mounted, just a messy clean up if mounted sideways.

Unless the filter is vertical, you will loose the water filtering capabilities. Fuel storage tanks are prone to getting moisture/condensation, I'd be putting the filter in the proper position.

I see trucks going down the highway all the time with the filter hanging sideways. It's best to have it hanging down so you can drain the water because the water will settle at the lowest point.
