You may want to try your welding helmet first. Cover your exposed skin. I guess it depends on how much you cut.

I was cutting some thick steel plates with a plasma cutter, and was just using some welding googles. It took a while to do the job. I later realized I had "sunburn" on my face from the cutting. Even better, I looked like a racoon with a white band around my eyes.

For the work I do with my plasma I wear my polarized prescription sunglasses. They are dark enough that I have to have a work light directed where I'm cutting to see the lines. I have no eye strain and I don't see spots after I'm done.

I find the auto-darken helmet quite distracting when using a plasma cutter. The arc is not visible during most of the cut, so the helmet runs in in non-darken mode. Non darken mode is OK for positioning a MIG gun or stick at the start of a weld, but not for sustained precision work, so it is too dark for following the cut line as well as I would like.

Then as I hit the end of the cut, the arc becomes visible, triggers the helmet and the lens goes dark. But now the scribe line is completely invisible (not lit by the arc), and the gun tends to run off for that last 1/2 inch or so.

I think gas welding goggles should work better..

Don,
I also have the Hobart Air Force 400. The #5 shade in my oxy/acetelene googles works fine, though I have thought about ordering a #5 for one of my inexpensive welding helmets simply to gain more protection for my face and neck. Tom

Based on my limited experience, that would be more than plenty. We usually just use the dark glasses that you'd use for an oxy/acetylene torch.
