I realize this isn't an appliance forum, but I thought their might be someone out there who knows something about appliances.
The wife's dryer won't heat up. Since we live in the middle of no where, I don't want to just call a repairman and spend $$$ on a 10-year old dryer. I assume the thermostat must be bad or could it be something else? Thanks for the help.

Get yourself one of those blue and yellow reader's digest repair books. They cover many types of applicance repairs. You can find them at yard sales or flea markets. New ones can be had at Lowes for $31.00. I have fixed my washer and dryer using these for years. Your problem is most likely the heating element. Make sure you unplug the dryer before you start anything else or you'll be burnt too. Take the element to a used appliance place. They usually keep new ones on hand or can order for you.

Sounds like one or both of the elements burned up. I had the same problem about 5 years ago on a 20 year old sears dryer. I found an appliance supply shop in the yellow pages. The element cost around 30 bucks I think. Took about an hour or so to fix it.

Ammana Dryer, they have a "thermal Fuse" one shot deal. Take off the front cover 2 screws on the bottom front facing the dryer on the left hand side in the back you'll see the element behind a peice of sheet metal, in the middle top half of that metal you'll see a device with two wires, one going to the device on the front, one to another device on the lower left of the element. Cost- parts stor $4, Maytag dealer $8, go to the parts store buy 2 and tape one inside- they only blow on Sunday

A laundra-mat owner told me that he didn't allow people to use dryer sheets in his dryers. He said the stuff from the sheets would coat the element sensor and give false reading shutting down element.
Anyone else hear about this? ~brad

I hadn't heard that one, but my sister told me that an appliance repair man showed her that using those sheets puts a coating on the lint screen so that it will hold water. She took it out, cleaned the lint out of it, poured some water in it, and it didn't run through. That's got to be bad for air flow.

Here"s one for ya, on the exhaust side normally there is a circuit breaker that is only a one shot deal... it will not reset cuz it is tellin you to clean out your hose and vent. the diagram will say it is a fuse and it is. Get a test light or meter and read across each one and don"t be surprised at the appliance store for what they want to sell the new one for..

If the dryer spins but won't heat.. check to make sure 220v is working.. that is.. that both phases of 110 are there.

Could be thermostat.. could be a broke heating element.
