Just got one of those "automatic" welding hoods. There the kind that go dark when you strike the arc and stay dark until you lift the rod off the work at which point the go light again.
My gosh what a difference it makes! I'm repairing my pipe trailer and have redesigned the thing from the mainframe up so I'm doing a lot of welding. Struggled for a few days with my old hood and decided to try one of these new fangled jobs 'cuz a local store had 'em on sale.I'll never go back to the old hood. They sure make life easy especially when you doing out of position welds.

Heheh, DON'T go back to your old hood. I finally got one of these just recently, but got a chance to borrow one while doing some TIG welding a year or so ago. After a day or two with the auto hood I gave it back and did some stick welding with my trusty old Jackson. Kept forgetting to nod my head to drop the hood! Just sitting there looking at the end of the rod and BANG.

Of course on the other hand, I found myself nodding my head out of habit every time I fired the TIG for the first hour or so with the auto hood.

Have you ever forgot to put it down because you got used to not raising it anymore?

That's what I'm talking about. You get so used to striking the arc while looking at your work, you forget to nod your head to drop the hood. BLAMMO! Blue spots everywhere.

Ten you find yourself nodding your head to drop the hood when you are trying to weld with the auto hood on. No worse than stomping the floor in a vain attemot to get the heat up when switching from TIG to oxy-acetylene I guess.

Or tapping your wire gun to strike an arc after spending a few days using a stick welder--BTDT!

LOL, never done that one as I haven't done very much MIG welding, but yeah, I can see it! At least I haven't tried to put the torch striker to the TIG... yet.

BIG ol' 10-Roger on that! I keep mine at work (they only have the ones with the iddy-biddy winder in 'em, I need the big window) and had to do some welding at home this weekend using my old style spare.

Yuck...

I'll second THAT. One of the items everyone who got hired at the now-defunct frame plant got was an auto-darkening weld hood. AFTER I got the sensitivity setting right on mine [yellow strobe light on one of the robots caused it to "blink," causing me to get flashed a couple of times, until I got the sensitivity right], I can honestly say that weld hood is the best improvement on an old invention I've ever seen.
