I have an OTC Scanner with the cartridge for testing up until 1992. Does anyone know if it is worth while to try and upgrade to use it on the 1996 and up vehicles with OBD II? It sounds like I would need the software and some cables. I would only use it for my own use, plus family members and friends so it may be hard to justify the cost. Would I be better off with a hand held model?

Yeah, I know how it can go when working on someone's vehicle. You can be working on the ignition or something and if the left rear wheel bearing starts making noise you probably caused that. :o))) It is fun to try and learn about how the different sensors and the whole system works, so I would like to do more than just pull the codes. I am retired so I have the time to putz with it but can't justify the cost. Isn't it always choosing between time or money that affects your life?

You can often find the update cable and smart inserts for use on OBD II cars up to 2001 on Ebay. I would not recommend purchasing these items new from a store/tool truck as they are very expensive. The enhanced monitor is only supported up to the 2001 model year. It was replaced by the Genisys platform. If all you're doing is wanting to pull codes and NOT view live data or enhanced dtc information, a OBD II type code checker may be cheaper in the long run but, it won't provide you all of the information or functions needed to make some repairs.

I emailed OTC about my Monitor 4000 and they said if it truly is a Monitor 4000 then 92 is as high as it can be updated to. I've been looking at the Genysis, and I would be able to use it quite a bit, but the cheapest I have found it so far is $2200.

He said he has a 4000"E". They will update to '98, and maybe a year or two newer than that.

There's a couple different versions of that tool, but I think they can be usefull up to '98 or '99.

You can get the cartridges on ebay for less than $50.00, but cables and "smart inserts" for certain apps can get costly, and I don't know if OTC even supports all those any more.
