Has anybody done their own windshield repair with those kits available at auto parts stores? I like the looks of the Permatex kits, but haven't bought one yet.

Any tips on repairing rock chips with a DIY kit?

Have done a couple of windshields with those kits. Warm weather and in the shade. If you just have a little round spot about the size of a pea you are fine. ANY webbing, "that means little lines" you are sunk. It will never stop spreading. Clean the hole out a little AND be gentle. I have found that ammonia is the best glass cleaner. Yup, the cleaner the better. Follow the directions and it is about one hour. No it will not distort cause it is only a .oo1 thick. Hold that plunger out for as long as possible to make shure there are no bubbles. PUSH that high tech crazy glue in and hold it. I need to do one on my Explorer so I need a kit. The chip is very tiny so I should have no trouble with it. If you get the chance to watch a real fixit guy do one it will stick with you forever. A picture is worth .....!

If you have glass coverage check with your insurance company. they freqently wave the deductible to get chips and cracks repaired to avoid repalcing windshield.

I have used these kits a few times after getting hit with a bouncing rock off of a dump truck...and they do work pretty well! It's best to do it as soon as possible to ensure that you are able to push out all of the air. Also make sure to pick out any loose glass. If all goes well, it's hard to tell that the repair is there. Typically, the only give-away is when you don't get all of the air out and you can see an air pocket in one of the cracks.

i used a bullseye brand kit on my jeep it worked very well. just make sure you push the syringe down tightly when you push the fluid in otherwise it squirts everywhere when it pops off. i got it at the auto store in town i think it was 11 or 12 dollars. tim

The Wally world $7 windsheild repair kits work great, have done a half dozen. The kits for multiple repairs will save you money if you use it up within a year or so. The repair causes no distortion. About a half hour job.
