I have a Dell Dimension 4600 computer running Windows XP. When using the computer the computer completely shuts down, then restarts itself. It will keep repeating this about every 60 seconds. Does anyone have an idea on whats wrong, or have an answer on how to fix it. PS this is my daughters computer. Thanks for help.

Is it covered in dust?

A shot of canned air (or other **clean** **dry** air...oil and rusty water from your compressor would be bad :) )...or a crevice tool from a vacuum used carefully.

Minute seems awful quick...but if you let her heat up first then see the quick reboots, it could be a thermal issue. Just something quick to check.

Could be a memory problem, have you recently upgraded it? If so take it back out, or try reducing the amount of memory by removing some.

By default when WinXP encounters a system failure, it reboots without warning. The setting that controls this can be changed:

Control Panel/System/Advanced/Settings (Startup & Recovery)/System Failure/Uncheck-Automatically Restart.

To view the event log: Admistrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/eventvwr.

The Shutdown Event Tracker provides a simple and standard mechanism you can use to consistently document the reasons for shutting down or restarting your computer. The information provided is recorded in the system log in Event Viewer.

Can also be a worm (virus) or the heat sink is not on the cpu correct.

My money would be on the heat sink being loose. Back when I was a corporate PC geek we had a bunch of Dell Optiplex (Dell corporate version desktop PC) that had the clip that held the heat sink come loose in transit. Did the same thing.
