There is another tractor board that I visit. But about 5 days ago when I go there it opens to the main page, and then a Microsoft Internet Exploer box opens up and says (Click to run an active x control on this webpage). When I click ok it shuts down internet exploer, only having this problem on this one site. What do I have to do to fix it. Any help would be appreciated. Thank Mike from MI

Mike,

ActiveX is widely exploited by malicious software. Unlike a Java applet, an ActiveX control has broad privileges on your computer.

There is no reason for a website to use ActiveX, other than laziness on the part of the developer. When you see IE pop up a message, it's saying it doesn't know for sure whether it's safe to run the control. So how are you supposed to know?

As I said before, there are a number of browsers that work just fine without ActiveX. Use one of them instead of IE.

Don't ever run an ActiveX control. Best thing is to use a browser that does not even support ActiveX, such as Firefox.

Diesel,

You want to know what I do? Well, I haven't run Windows at home for years. Been using Red Hat and Fedora Core Linux for the past ten years. Never a problem with trojans, virii, etc. And I don't have to load any third party antivirus software, etc. to make up for operating system deficiencies.

Now if you insist on running Windows, I guess you cross your fingers and hope for the best.

I think FireFox has a downloadable extension that allows a page to be opened in IE from within FireFox to deal with sites that require ActiveX functions.

Supposedly IE7 (in beta) will address security issues. We'll see . . .

Mike,

These computors sure can be a nightmare. I"ve been trying to just get on line this past couple of days. Frontier must be having some tech. problems?

I"m no computor Guru, I always blame myself once I start having problems. Thinking I push the wrong button some wheres again.

I see I did have a update that showed up on an Icon in the low right hand corner of the my screen. It down loaded itself.
My biggest problem is tracking cookies. They seen to slow my computor down something terrible. It"s slow enought without them have to spy on me too. So I run my Ad-AWare SE this cleans the bugs out for awhile. Good luck Mike in MI

You need to get Spybot Search & Destroy. It's free and takes about 5-8 minutes to run each time. It's compatable with Ad-Aware. It found a Trojan Horse that Norton kept missing. Of course there are others you can use too. Do a search on this site. Some were mentioned a few days ago.

You didn't say which version of Windows you were running, so the following is assuming XP.

First, if you don't automatically do Windows updates, do so first and see if that solves the problem.

If you have been, there is a patch for an April cumulative update, which you should have if you have been doing auto updates. Apparently some have experienced problems similar to yours after installing that April update.

Go to this link and there is a patch available for those affected by that update. Supposedly this has cured that problem for some. Never had this problem, so can't say it will work. Do know it will only work if that April update was installed.

Or.... use a different browser. I allowed MS to upgrade my version and they killed Outlook Express. Couldn't even get it back with a reformat. Lost everything in the email program.

I'm very happy with Maxthon browser, with the 58 million downloads. I'm finished with MS updates.
