Parts washer paint thinner

Have had 20-25 gallons of Wal-Marts finest paint thinner in my parts washer for a couple of three years. Seems like its beginning to smell like something "burnt" or maybe its turning rancid. Any thoughts on how to refresh the lot or should I just dump it?

Try a cup of vinager, cooks add a teaspoon to califlower, brocili or other smelly
stuff so they will be odorless while cooking. Who knows it might work here also.

Hi bigron,

I used to save thinner in clear plastic bottles after washing out paint brushes with it. Almost anything except varnish would settle out of it, eventually forming a solid layer at the bottom so that the clear thinner could be poured off without needing to be filtered. Never could get rid of the nasty smell though. Eventually it would smell so bad that the savings wasn't worth the unpleasantness of working with it. Post your results here if you try the wicking process, especially if it generates cleaned thinner that smells better than the stuff you started with.

Takes a while ,but you can put a piece of old hay rope in it and drape it over the side of the container and put the other end into a container placed a little lower that the first container.The thinner will siphon out and down the rope,cleaning it in the process.No need to toss it.
