Ran a mig for about 4 hrs yesterday, after 15-20 mins picked up hang of it. Fellow said I was doing a decent job after I got used to it but I didn't care for the appearance of it and question quality compared to my stick welding. Should "good" mig welds resemble "good " stick welds? I question if my mig weld was getting proper penatration into bottom plate of lap weld. It was not a gas shield welder, instead running flux core wire. After using it for that length of time I am less enthusiastic about getting one Thanks, Mike

"Good" Mig welding will tend to look better than "good" stick welding. It has an advantage in that you don't run out of electrode on a long weld. A long weld will perhaps take two or more sticks, and the restarts my look "humpy". We have a bunch of old hard core union pipefitter types were I work. We have successfully gone over to Mig using a shield gas in our fab shop over the past three years. Most of the guys who've sticked for years have picked up the hang of the Mig. Most of the younger guys have learned it more quickly, and they are turning out pipe welds that are positively breathtaking--that is if you are in to that sort of thing.

I have only used the flux core mig 1 time and I didn't like it either. Maybe I wasn't doing something correct. I've used a gas shield mig many times and they are great. The weld can be made to look great. But looks can be decieving. You have to watch the weld burn into the base metal on both parts.

We had some new guys learning where I used to work. I held a piece for one to weld one day. When I turned it loose, it hit the floor. It had a beautiful weld about 1" long burned in one side. It just takes a little instruction and lots of practice. I still like my stick too though.
