inductive spark detection

Hi, I have a question about operating a Sun inductive tune-up analyzer that I'm using to test whether plug wires are going bad.

I bought this thing back in the 1980s and used it hardly at all since then. It is so old it is actually made in the USA! This is the type that has no internal battery, so nothing to corrode.

Q: is it normal for the tach reading to fluctuate, even dropping to zero sometimes? Or does that indicate the plug wire it's clipped to is getting defective? Thanks

If the timing chain is loose, the rpm may fluctuate as will the light, but it should not go to zero. That sounds like a loose connection.
