Want-Need a press. I have 2 20ft pieces of 6 inch channel iron and want to build one myself. Anyone build their own? Any suggestions on drilling holes to match up? any ideas on mounting hyd jack?Any way to mount jack upside down and get it to work? Money is real tight and would prefer to make my own than rob Peter and Paul to buy one. Any help is appreciated. Chris

Be sure to design a cable lift for the bed. It's too hard to hold it up with one hand and insert the pins with the other.

Just made a similar press this winter. Used two five foot lengths of 6 inch, 3/8 wall channel iron with a 12 inch I beam welded on top, with quarter inch plate for 4 corner gussets. Added 3 half inch thick sheets to I beam web, so it is 1 3/4 inch thick. Used 3x4 x 1/2 inch angle for the bed- 4 pcs. Two welded together for each side, so it looks like a C-channel. Drilled 1 1/16 inch holes for 1 inch pins. Two holes can be pinned on each end. Holes in channel and bed are 4 inches apart. Angle iron in open side of channel guides pins to the opposite hole without fishing for them. Carefull measuring and layout is how to get the holes right. With a long pilot drill you can drill from one side to the other- otherwise it's a matter of carefull layout and step drilling. My press is mounted on the movable end of an overhead hoist (pivots 90 degrees), so it doesn't take up any floor space. I cannot lift the bed by myself, so I'm working on a cable lift. Jack is hung with typical spring/pipe guide setup. Push pins of various sizes interchange to match diameter of shaft being pushed. Pix may follow.

I built a press using a 20 Ton Jack. I inverted the jack and mounted it on a rolling trolley so it can be moved from side to side. If you invert the jack, you will have to keep the pump flooded with oil. To do this, I mounted a reservoir above the jack. To keep the holes in alignment. I drilled 1/8" pilot holes before drilling the 3/4" holes.

An easier method is to go to www.harborfreight.com

What is the setup to get the oil from the reservoir to the jack? In other words, where does the supply connect to the jack so it will work upside down? You must be pushing the jack handle up to get downward movement.
