Both batteries for my Porter Cable cordless drill won't hold a charge anymore. In the past few years I've had Porter Cable, Dewalt, Bosh and Black and Decker cordless drills. Plus I keep a Harbor Freight one in the house for my wife to use, it works fine for light duty work. The batteries always fail on all brands of the drills, and they're as expensive as the drill. I'm through buying expensive drills, they don';t last any longer than the cheaper ones. I saw a Hitachi 18 volt 1/2 inch chuck cordless drill at Lowes that looked pretty nice. It was reduced from $149 to $119. Anyone have any experience with them?

On the farm, I use my cordless drill more than any other tool, and I can't be without one. Right now I'm down to my wife's Harbor Freight one, and I don't want to abuse it.

Thanks for any info!!!

Bought that drill a few years ago at Lowes. Best drill I ever had.

Rich,

Buy aftermarket batteries for you cordless tools - this winter I bought two for my Ryobi 12v drill. Brand name and local battery shop (Interstate Batteries) wanted about $50 per battery. I bought 2 on the internet for $14 apiece. So far, they have been better batteries than the originals. I got them about January - I have used the drill a fair bit since then, but I am still working on the first charge for the first battery.

If you are interested, I will look for my reciept and let you know what web site I got it from.

If I were in the market to buy a new cordless anything right now, I would check out the Ridgid line at Home Depot. They seem to be built pretty solid and they have a lifetime warranty on everything including the batteries.

Hi Ryan;

I not sure I understand what's being implied of the warranty. Do you take this to mean that they (HD) will replace the battery after it dies? Over and over again? Thanks,

Roger

Yep, It is very similar to what the craftsman warranty used to be. Wear it out and bring it in and they give you a new one. Over and over again.

I seem to remember there had been a few post about this on here in the past.

I'm the one who started the thread on Ridgid Cordless Drills. I went to their website and e-mailed them. They admitted that they only replace the batteries if they determine that they're defective. You have to bring the tool or batteries to a designated Ridgid repair center, and they look at the batteries and make the decision. I see two problems with that warranty...First, the repair center may not be near you, in my case the closest one is an hour away...Second, I doubt that they'll determine the battery was defective. Odds are, if you bring it in, they'll tell you that you abused it or overused it.

Their warranty is very misleading, so even if their tools are great, I'd be reluctant to buy any because of their misleading warranty.

I hate to disagree, but I just was at the Home Depot in Janesville and they had a big sign that said right on it. Free Parts, Free Service, Free Batteries Forever.

I asked a guy what I would have to do if I bought one and the battery died. He said to just bring in the battery and they would hand me a new one. I wouldn"t have to send it to RIDGID or anything like that.

I think the trick might be just to take it to Home Depot where they don"t know any better than to test it.

Of course as always, your mileage may vary based upon location.

Ryan, I hope that you're right, but I asked the tool dept manager at the Home Depot near me, and he said that they won't replace anything, and you have to go to Ridgid. Either it varies at each location, or Home Depot changed their policy. I'll ask next time I go to Home Depot.

Hi Ryan;

Well the last time I took a Carftsman tool back about a year or so ago, they replaced it. But, we're talking about replacing batteries here, right?

Roger

I have both 18 volt Dewalt and Firestorm drills and prefer the Dewalt. However I bought a 12 volt Firestorm impact driver with two batteries and charger at Lowes for $29 and it runs circles around the other drill drivers that I have and it is light weight. It is the best for driving phillips head screws and also small hex head cap screws and nuts. It doesn't cam out of the phillips head screws like a regular drill driver does. The major drawback is that it doesn't offer the one hour quick charge that the Dewalt 18 volt drill does. After I win the lottery I believe I'll buy one of those new 28 volt Milwaukees. Now that's a man's drill.
