OK guys next problem. I have a fan motor from a window A/C unit that I wish to use in my shop. The motor is three speed split phase with five color coded leads and I cant figure out how to wire it correctly nor can I find any diagrams on the internet. I have the switch and capacitor that was used in the unit. I assume that the coding is standardized? Could any of you explain how to wire this thing up? Sure woulda been easy if they has wrote down how things hooked up eh?Thanks

WHT = Neutral (Common)
BLK = Hi Spd
BLU = Med Spd
RED = Lo Spd
YEL = Capacitor

Capacitor is connected to WHT & YEL

Use an ohmmeter and find the two wires with 30 to 100ohms resistance. Connect the capacitor to them. Find the resistance between the other three and get back to us. Odds are the white will connect to neutral. One of the colours will be energized at a time to produce various speeds.

Should have called here first. If the unit is still together you pull the switch with the wires still on or make a little diagram. The only wires that would come off are for the compressor. The switch will have numbers or letters. Let us know jeffcat

That's the problem, was taken apart for me and thrown in a box. I have tried the wires several ways and can at best get a humm, lots of ways to to attach 5 wires to a switch and capacitor, LOL.

Was it a 120 v a/c unit? If so, the white wire ( does it have a white wire? ) will be for neutral with the other colored leads for the different speeds.

So applying 120v would be hooking white to white and the black wire coming from your switch to whichever colored lead gave you the fan speed you want. Hook the bare ground wire to the fan housing somewhere to give it a chassis ground.

Sorry, yes is 120V. Going from (bad) memory the leads are white, off white or yellow, black, blue, red.

The black, red and blue are the 3 speeds. Each one of those to either wht or yellow should give a resistance. Least resistance is high speed and most is low speed. Is it a run cap (in a metal oval housing) or a start cap usually in a black plastic housing. Whichever it is, it is wired in series with that respective winding.
