Went to TSC to buy a Dewalt 14" chop saw. In their catalog, they showed a Heavy Duty DW801 but they only had a Heavy Duty DW800 in stock. The 801 showed to be about 40 bucks more so I started looking at the specs. They are both 15 amp, 3800 Rpm saws. I purchased the the 800 model and tried it out last night on some 2-3/8 Oilfield tubing. It cut it but it was slow going. The motor never got hot but it didn't seem to slice it as easy as my buddies Black in Decker.

Would anyone know the difference in these two saws (DW-800 & DW-801)? I'll mainly use it to cut 4" C Purlins and to cut misc. pipe and stuff, but I also will cut some 2-3/8 and 2-7/8 pipe with it as well.

Any other suggestions on chop saws?

Check your blade. I have found that using a thinner blade cuts faster, but won't last as long.

At 15 amps the chop saw is slightly above two HP. This is the maximum amps that can be pulled from a common 14 gauge fed 110 volt receptacle. To get the job done quickly it takes a good 5 HP chop saw and more electric power.

I should have checked their web site before posting. The Dewalt web site shows the DW800 at 3.5 hp and the DW801 at 5.5 hp. BUT, it also shows both saws rated at 15amps???? Ummm, I'm sure I want the 5.5 hp, but how in the world do they rate the amperage the same Hi/Lo effeciency motors I guess.....

Check the voltage and see if it is 240 volts. That is the only way that I know it can be done. One HP is 746 watts, therefore 5 hp is 3730 watts. 3730 watts divided by 120 volts equal 31.08 amps. 3730 watts divided by 240 volts equal 15.54 amps. The manufacturers take liberties and will cut the HP slightly on the motor as to not excede the amps of the receptacle and then round off the HP for marketing. Slick aren't they! Air compressor manufacturers abuse this and other tactics the most in my opinion. Good luck

Manufacturers seam to be able to take great liberity in the way they rate horse power. As stated 1 hp is 746 watts. I think that manufacturers get their hp from the blade tip on saws. How they get it with shop vacs I havn't figured out. You should look at the amount of water column it will lift.

Good Luck,
Dusty

aint sure what the diffeence is, but it could be the difference of an electric brake and no brake

ive got a 14" makita chop saw which was very disapionting when cutting 5mmx100mm steel sheet, so i tried to cut some 1/2" rod x4 in a bundle.
It did it but not as good as they say.The best thing about it was that i got it for free so i havent really lost anything, but i dont think i would buy one after what ive seen.
