Okay, Being old fashioned Im basically a huge fan of the old black n white movies from the thirties to fifties, the old classics like Grapes of Wrath (My all time favorite) and Casablanca etc etc. HOWEVER there are a few good newer movies in my opinion, for example I just watched (for about 3rd timve over the years) The Shawshank Redemption and its a great move. A few other newer movies my favorites are "Sling Blade" "Hearts in Atlantis" "Shine" and "A Beautiful Mind" I may have the last title incorrect, I meant the one about the famous Princeton Mathemetician John whats his name

Take care yall n God Bless

I have to agree with you on Sling Blade. Its one of my all time favorites. Ive watched it hundreds of times and it still hasnt gotten old. In fact as a joke I walked into a the cafe where I go for coffee walking talking and acting like Carl which got a rise outta quite a few of the folks in there. Open Range with Robert Duvall was another pretty good movie thats considered "newer"

My favorite movies of all time are: To Kill A Mockingbird, & The Carbine Williams Story. I was fortunate to actually get to meet & talk to Mr. Williams, when I was a kid, so I guess that is why I am so fond of that movie.

Citizen Kane

No question on North by Northwest! I have the widescreen collectors remake. WOW if she steams up my video screen anymore! I would love to have dinner on the New York Central with Eva. My computer has a Dell 19 inch Tinitron monitor made by SONY. An auwsome monitor and a H----ll of a picture! If Mel Brooks walked into Warner Brothers today and said "I have this movie about a Ni--er sherif and Ch--nks-and Dik--s and a German singer whoes name in yidish means doing the nasty, they would throw him SOOOO far out of the place!!!!! I just bust a gut every time with the camp fire and "What is a dazzling urbanite like you doing in a rustick setting like this"? "My Grandma was Dutch" Gucci saddle bags. "Yea but I shoot with this hand". "Well raise my rent"! "Baby please I am not from Havana" PETA and the ASPCA would have a cow when the horse gets punched out. "Let's let MONGO kill him". "Mongo just a pawn in game of life" O get me off of this!
Of all the marshal arts films I just love HERO. What a total bummer of an ending! The Emperor's word is LAW! He must be exicuted ! The cinematography is so pretty and if you remember some of it is supposed to be battles fought in the mind, it is great. You also have a whole new understanding of what it was like to be under seige with thousands of arrows inbound! Get the "Proffessional" with the extral 24 minutes. It is a whole new movie!
A Very cute and good movies is "The Dish". It is about the huge radio telescope in Parks Austrailia during the moon walk. Great fun and a gentle breath of fresh air.
The Three Amigos is another silly but cute one. I love the singing horses and the turtle saying good night.
MIB the first movie is a hooot! I hope they make a third but I doubt it.
On Ebay you can find all kinds of stuff. In Scifi check out "Quiet Earth" You will never ever see another movie where a guy is so screw---ed at the end as when "Zak" goes through the "Effect" again.
On the Beach and How I learned to love the Bomb just stand my hair on end. Waltzin Matilda just haunts you and Trout fishing will never be the same. The sceen when he kicks loose the bomb and rides it down,,, I still don't see how people laugh at that. I see it as a very sober minute and way to go. Just me.
Never forget the chariot race in Ben Hur! His boyhood friend sure knew how to DIE!
How can you forget the tune "Little fish little fish " in the movie "Captains Courageous" He is all stove in captain. Cut the cable. Wow that started to choke me up.
I love "A Christms Story" and used to listen to Jean Shepard on WOR out of New York from the late fifties till 1976. He was a woderfull storie teller! I guess that is enough for now. Jeffcat

Somebody mentioned John Wayne...picked up DVD of "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valens" in the Walmart $5.50 bin recently. John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, B&W. A popular song by that name came out back in the 50s I believe. Good, but not spectacular movie with a surprise ending.

We like the group that includes The Three Musketeers, Man in the Iron Mask, Count of Monte Cristo, and one or two others along that line. Also found an excellent make (not all are that good) of Les Miserables. We pretty much shop the budget bins at Walmart and Goodwill, but have paid over $10 for a few! :)

Just bought our first DVD player a couple of weeks ago and picked up a two DVD set of the old B&W TV documentary "Victory at Sea" (music by Richard Rogers) for $5.50 in the Walmart budget bin. Watched it faithfully as a kid, and looking forward to seeing it again. Have the three 33 rpm LP soundtrack out in the barn waiting for time to burn to CD!

Man...could go on forever on old favorite movies. You watch a lot of really old ones when you tend to squeeze the nickel till the buffalo bellows!

:)

My favorites at the moment:

Brick: A modern film noir set in a CA high school

Serenity: A sci-fi/western mix

I gotta put in a plug for Netflix--It"s a great service if you"re a movie buff.

Netflix sends DVD"s straight to me, I watch them at my leisure, and then send it back. No late fees, and they have a huge selection. Pretty cheap, too.

Last of the Mohicans is my all time favorite. The music is great too. Second Hand Lions is a very close 2nd. I don't remember when it came out in the theaters. A friend loaned it to me because of all the neat old cars in it. I probably wouldn't have rented it. Man was I surprised. Such a great movie.

Last of the Mohicans. Book was written by James Fenimore Cooper, a romance based on an actual event in the French-Indian war. Great story, great music, sometimes a little hard to understand the dialogue.

The Usual Suspects. Came out about the same time as the over-rated Pulp Fiction, similar genere but a far a better movie.

The Princess Bride. When we ran a video store, every time we played it in the store, it would rent. Never were able to play it all the way thru in the store.

You have a few there that are pretty good, wish I had time to sit and think about it, there were a lot of really good old movies out there, the flight of the pheonix with jimmy stewart ain"t bad, most of the old bogart movies were pretty good, johy wayne had some great ones, true grit, rooster cogburn and many others, steve mcqueen had some real good ones bullet, and the hunter, the old movies are so much better than the new ones I wonder why they even bother to make new ones not much real talent out there now..

When they are going up and down all of those streets I want ALL of the cars that are parked there. The only thing I can say is there are a few toooo many shifts unless you have a ten speed on that Mustang! Jeffcat

A movie with a lot of this kind off pace. " O Brother where art thou?" If you know your Greek stories it makes a whole lot of fun scense! I just love the old man on the hand car. Love some of the music and how it is used to set the mood. If you get the DVD go to the "Extras" and see how they made the movie. Very interesting.

Here are some more to watch.
David Niven in "Stairway to Heaven". 1946 You can find it on Ebay. Wonderful WWII love story with some cute twists. You will never think of the after life the same way again!
"Cabin in the sky" is a very good morale story.
"Earthworm Tractors" is just plain silly!
Yes the original "King Kong"
"The Incredible Shrinking Man" makes you think.
"Gulllivers Travels" still charms.
You can also go into "Twilight Zone" and "Outer Limits". Rod Serling and crew were masters! I guess that is enough. Jeffcat

I'd definitely agree with you about the shawshank redemption. I think it's about the best role I've seen for Morgan Freeman. A Beautiful Mind is another good 'un (John Nash, the mathematician as you say). I haven't seen the others you mention, but I can see a trip to the video store coming up...
I like some of the old british films from the late 40's and 50's too. The Cruel Sea is well worth watching (and reading if you can find the book). My grandfather served on corvettes during the war and regarded it as the most accurate portrayal of life onboard he'd ever seen. Ice Cold in Alex, Hobsons Choice, Dam busters and The First of the Few are all pretty good too.
More recent film I've enjoyed are The Green Mile, Road to Perdition & the Last of the Mohicans.
Cheers, JV.

JV, Thanks for Johns (Nash) last name, hes still living I think.

Anywho, TRUST ME ON THIS: You definitely MUST SEE "Sling Blade" written, directed by and starring Billy Bob Thornton,,,,, ,,, "Shine" a true life story about the famous classical pianist David Helfgott,,,,,and Hearts in Atlantis starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, wait till you see those close up shots of him, such a dramatic actor.

I also liked Road to Perdition and Green Mile, Im gonna check out some of your favorites also, let me know what you think after you watch the ones mentioned above.

PS another of my old classic favorites is "How Green was my Valley" check it out

John,

Yes, Dr. Nash is still living, he even still maintins an office at Princeton and conducts research! If you haven"t you should really read the book that the movie was based on (same title) - I think Sylvia Nassar wrote it. It goes into a lot more depth than the movie, especially about his problems as well as his math research. Great read.

I am so glad to see another fan of Slingblade....a movie that is without a doubt, Billy Bob's finest hour in films. I actually figured there would be a sequel and a cult following. 'Ain't got no gas in it!' Whata ya got in thar you like to eat? ummmm, gimme the beeg un's. I call it a kaiser blade, some people call it a slingblade, got a blade shaped sorta like a bananner, thet the highway boys use fer clearin bresh and sech as that....

Then you gotta see Captains Courageous (Spencer Tracy circa 1943) and I recall The Blue Max(George Peppard circa 1964) as a good flick. Saving Pvt. Ryan is good and as mentioned Sgt. York with Gary Cooper is unbeatable. Fried Green Tomatoes is a decent watch, Bridges of Madison County and K Pax with Kevin Spacey.

Really good watchable film.

S'notafilmbut... Band of Brothers is a good watch, especially if you like Saving Private Ryan. The Silence of the Lambs is pretty good if you like Anthony Hopkins, although Hannibal & Red Dragon are pretty dire...
He's also in A Bridge Too Far, which is pretty good.
