Several years ago I replaced the "3 hp" motor on my Craftsman compressor with a "5 hp" from Harbor Freight. It bolted right on and has worked well. (Same HF motor has been downgraded to "3 hp." It is often on sale through HF catalogs for about $79.)

I fixed one for a neighbor several years back. I believe it was 3hp. Bought a compressor motor from Harbor Freight, same hp, same speed, same shaft size, about $67. Cut the base off the sears electric motor, hammered it so the top was flat, welded the seams and ground it off then bolted it to the harbor freight motor and installed. Worked out pretty slick and is still running. Much less expensive than the sears electric motor. The sears motor had an odd base to it, otherwise it was just a motor. Compressor motors usually have capacitor start and sometimes capacitor run so look for a compressor motor. Good luck. joe in ny

If you have the part number for the motor
you can go to the sears website and look it up.
That will tell you how much they want for it.
Or go to the SurplusCenter website and see what
they want for a motor of the same duty cycle and size.

I just rebuilt my sears compressor about 5 years ago.
It has a 5hp motor on it. Compressor is about 30 years old.
Cost me as much to rebuild the compressor head
as I could have gotten a whole new compressor for.
But they don"t make "em like they used to.
I expect to get another 30 years of service out of it.
Might even change the oil in it periodically this time.

Ric1: Without knowing what your air compressor is exactly, it's hard to say, but I'm betting that the motor is nowhere near 5 running HP. Compressor manufacturers often play games with the HP ratings, and more than likely your motor is only 3/4 hp or so. If this is a common homeowner-type compressor (single stage, single cylinder, oilless pump, running on 110-volt with about a 25-gallon tank) then a 3/4 or 1 hp compressor-duty motor will run about $100 or so, and are a dime-a-dozen used. A true 5-hp motor will be about a foot in diameter and almost certainly run on 220-volt or higher. If that's the case, then you're looking at several hundred dollars, plus a good chunk of change to ship it if necessary.

It's been awhile since I shopped for a new motor, but when I needed a new one horsepower motor for an old table saw, I found that I could buy a complete new table saw for less money. Granted the new table saw was not in the same league as the old one, but this will give you an idea.
