I'm appealing to you ex-spurts to help me make a decision. I'm buying a new air compressor today and have narrowed it to 2 choices.

1. Lowes has a Porter-Cable 6hp, 25 gal. horizontal portable with an aluminum oil lubed compressor for $339. I'm not impressed with the dinky little plastic wheels, and I don't know how they handle their warranty work.

2. Home Depot has a 5hp, 26 gal. with a cast iron compressor. It is a "Husky" brand, allegedly made by Campbell-Hausfield for HD. Their warranty is handled by a really good local shop, with whom I am familiar. The price is $349. I haven't looked at it yet, but headed there after work. I failed to get the air delivery figgers on this one over the phone.
Whatda y'all think??

Thanks to all for your replies. I had to leave before I saw any of the answers, due to problems on the board Friday PM.

I selected the Husky at Home Depot for a number of reasons. It appears to be built better over all...the wheels, handle, etc are heavier. The compressor is cast iron, rather than aluminum. The motor, though rated 1hp less, is bigger(for whatever that's worth). The cfm is a little lower, but completely adequate for my needs. As far as the warranty is concerned, I could take either back to the store for exchange for 90 days. After that, the Lowes unit would have to be shipped out for repair. On the HD unit, the warranty work, if any, is handled by a local shop where I do business, anyway. I don't expect to need it, but that would make a huge difference if I did.

Shep, I'm at the other end of the Sovereign Republic of Soganofla, near Chattahoochee. I find myself over in your neck of the woods from time to time, and would love to drop by sometime. I'll let you know next time I'm comin' thataway.

Warranty should never be considered in the purchase of new merchandise. State laws provide plenty of warranty, and a product that has to be fixed ain't the one you want to buy anyway.

How many things have you had to have fixed under warranty? And it wasn't a hassle? And you where satisfied because it worked perfectly forever after.

Concentrate on defining what you need and filling those needs with the best product that your budget will allow and

NO CREDIT IS GOOD CREDIT!!!

I'd go with the Husky. The cast iron name-brand pump will last longer than most aluminum jobs. The bigger tank will help, too. You also want to get the current draw figures off the motors. There's no way either of those are near 5HP. 746 Watts = 1HP

Realize that both manufacturers are somewhat lying when they advertise the HP. Neither machine is near what the HP indicates. You should get 4cfm per HP from a good machine. If both machines are direct drive (no belt) leave them in the store. Shop around for a belt drive that will give the most CFM per dollar spent, ignore the other hype.

I have the exact Campbell Hausfield from Home Depot. Depends what you are going to do with it. If you are looking to sandblast with it...don't buy it...it will never keep up because the CFM is not enough...otherwise, it works fine for the usual...tires, spray painting, impact wrenches etc....haven't had any trouble with mine and had it for almost 2 years.

If I could have spent a few more bucks, I would have definitely bought a 2 stage or at least one that had a CFM that would allow me to use a decent sandblaster and all would have been well.!!!

Good Luck.

Rick
