Couple of cheap impact wrench questions

Anyone here own one of those cheap 1/2" impact wrenches? Don't worry, I won't tell anyone if you do. Anyway, I just bought a used (almost free) one and I have a few questions. I have a bunch of air tools--just no impacts.

1. How much oil do you put in the clutch fill-hole?

2. What is the regular maintainance cycle?

3. Of the companies who sell these under their own names, who has the best support? Spare parts and manuals might come in handy.

4. What kind of fitting is supposed to go in the air inlet. I mean, the fitting between the wrench and male QD fitting. Mine just came with a QD screwed right into the handle. That squashed the valve ball return spring and made it impossible to pull the trigger. I'm using it without the spring right now, but I'd like to get in back in shape.

Thanks in advance. I spent the whole day taking this thing apart, cleaning the innards, and buffing the housing. Lookes better than new!

I have a number of the "El-Cheapo" imported impact wrenches from Harbor Freight, Big Lots, Wallmart, etc. Keep them oiled, they work just fine for home/farm shop use, to get really nasty dirty (working on manure spreaders), and to loan out to neighbors, friends, brothers and brother-in-laws. I like the "PIN" type better than the "FLOPPER" type, but, both will work. Keep the air pressure within rated and recommended ranges, keep the air clean and dry, keep them oiled and they will give good service. The only troubles that I have had were: 1) When a brother-in-law ran one of mine rated for 90 PSI at 150 to 175 PSI and twisted the square output shaft off. 2) When a friend ran one almost every evening for a month at full 90 PSI with dirty air with water in it and without oil. "It did not hold up too well." I do not think any impact wrench will hold up if not properly cared for. Good luck, Gordon in IN.

John, If it has the power for you in your shop, its okay if it is a cheap one. I work in a shop where time is money, and you won't find a cheap impact. But, the hammer end should be at least half full of light oil, 10 or 20 wt., what I've seen used. The air connector end is a large fitting that the spring seats against and takes a standard nipple for connecting to the air line, the Chicago Pneumatic 734 uses one. Be sure to drip a little oil down the air inlet when you put it down for a few days, as the moisture in the air is more harmful to the innards than is running. Also have seen the insides of the low priced tools tend to corrode up faster than do the high priced ones. If it works for you, and you have the impact sockets, smile every time you use it while you think about the 250 bucks you saved. John Ne.

Thanks for the help. I mainly got this thing to see if I needed in impact vs. all the years I've used ratchets and breaker bars. For $8 on eBay I can't really complain. Now that I know the answer is yes, I'll probably spring for a nice I-R or CP in the future. This one also would be good for working in less-than-ideal conditions--no big loss if it falls off the end of a dock.

Thanks again.

Have used "harbor freight" grade air tools for a very long time. At $19+ they are a great buy. price changes daily depending on your luck. one of mine is worn enough that 90 wt. gear lube greatly improves the torque output! On the other hand you will not twist off nearly so many nuts with a cheap gun. It really is a good thing, NEEDING TO GET A BREAKER BAR ONCE IN A WHILE IS MUCH QUICKER THAN BROKEN HARDWARE. JB
