Time to renew my anti-virus program.What you you finding the best? Have used Norton before. Thank You

Had AVG, it sucked for me. Got a bad virus, had to go back to something else to get rid of it.

A local computer show on AM radio last week recommended using free avg and not renewing Norton . I will probably give it a try when my Norton expires.

I use AVG, available from www.grisoft.com. They have a free version which I've been using for over 5 years now. Most of my family and friends have been suing it almost as long as well.

I've had it detect and repair virus and even trojans that Norton missed.

It has very little impact on system performance, and includes an email scanner, which I also use with no problems.

Upstates are 100% free, and mine checks for them once every day. Automatically downloads and installs them.

And I've never had it interfere with the normal use of my computer.

I've had norton interfere with the proper running of programs, cause numerous crashes, and degrade system performance to unbearable levels, and I had to pay for it, and for updates.

I'll cast my vote against Norton and Mcafee. Still can't convince me that they aren't the sob's that create these darn viruses. Who else has anything to gain by messing up John Q. Public's computer? I'll be checking out that avast thing after my Panda expires. Works ok. No complaints. Linux is cool, but it's not free if you want support, which I do. Also, it's not for the faint of heart. Better know what you're doing if you want to play that game. Or, at the very least, put it on a box you can do without if you get lost.

Forget an anti-virus and switch your operating system to Linux. I wouldn't say it would eliminate all your virus, worm, and spyware issues, but it will eliminate 99.99999% of them. Linux is free and is far more stable....it's been 1 1/2 months since I've needed to reboot my computer. And the best part is, you can tell Bill Gates to take his Windows software and stuff it.

For surfing and email, it works great. I would recommend Suse 10.0 from Novell if you are up for a small but rewarding challenge.

AVG & Avast have free versions for home use if you dig on their web sites enough.

Some folks say they aren't any good; I have 2 computers, one of each, & works for me. To follow up if you are on highspeed dialup or can afford to tie up the phone for long periods of time, Bit Defender, Panda, & most others have free on-line scans you can run on your machine every month or so & basically get a 'second opinion' of things. :)

Norton went bad about 2 years ago, I liked it until that point. It used my computer more than I could. Grrrr. It's also missing things; BiL had his computer go bad on him, turned out to be 13 viruses that Norton never saw. It also crashed his XP machine before that, got itself into an endless boot lockup where it would not uninstall, would not run until it finished installing. Ugh.

I quit using Norton years ago.
First I went to eTrust which I really liked.
But it got too much money for me to renew.
Now I use the free version of Avast and I really like it.

I took my Norton off, it slowed down the computer too much -- my email use is insignificant, and I never open email from anyone I don't know. True they could be infected, but that's the chance I have to take. I have two firewalls to keep hackers out, they don't impede performance at all.

I am using and have used Trend Micro� PC-cillin� Internet Security since 1995. IMHO it's the best on the market. Beats Nortons and McAfee hands down. It's kept my puter clean all these years. It'll cost $49.95 the first time to get it. But after that it'll be about half of that to renew.

I used to use Norton until it let a virus in which it simply could NOT repair or delete etc. I see it a the cheap n easy Yuppie version of Anti Virus, certainly NOT the best. After that I broke down and bought Computer Asociates (CA) EZ Anti Virus which was able to fix the virus and its never let any back in again, it seems muchhhhh better.

AFTER several crashes n viruses n bugs over the years, I now I run CA Anti Virus,,,,, Spyware,,,,,Ad and Spam Blocker,,,,, ,and use Norton Ghost to keep the puter toally backed up alllll the time. I also use disk shredder and disc cleanup and System Restore alllll the time and so far so good.

I am using Norton, but I've gotta find something else. Norton just plain uses up too much space and slows everything down to crawl, and sometimes even makes it stall out altogether. I hate it when it downloads those up-dates.

avg is free and uses less resourses than norton antiviris. download at 100-downloads.com if interested. they also have firewalls, antispyware, and other free programs.just my 2 cents worth. any questions look on the newbies.ws website. these guys are as helpful on computers as this website is on trackors
