Diesel in dry gas container

I bought a "new" 100 gallon fuel transport metal tank that had gasoline in it last year. It is now dry and the pump is as well. I figure to change the filter, slosh around a few gallons of diesel and then drain and change the filter again. I figure I would be good to go to put diesel in it again. Think so?
I mean, goes gasoline have any residuals or combustables that would impact the diesel?
This tank really is new and only had one fill of gas in it last summer. What do you think?

Our fuel hauler (years ago) would change tanks on the delievery truck with 20 gallons to go because that is what the hose held between gas and diesel. I would not worry about 1%.

I'm in the trucking business and if we get caught by surprise in the mountains we will put gasoline in our tanks (couple gallons) to keep from gelling the diesel fuel in very cold weather. It takes care of the wax, I know some folks that run it no matter what, and when you think about it, all conditioner is, mostly,is alcohol. But I use LUCAS in my truck. Oh and we was adding it to 100 gallons of fuel. So in my opinion you won't hurt anything.

We used to say that you shouldn't ever put diesel into a tank that had been used for gasoline, but that was many years ago when gasoline contained lead plus maybe a few other additives which were not good for a diesel engine. The lead and additives could penetrate into the steel of the tank and then slowly leach out and contaminate the diesel. Since gasoline has not contained lead for a long time now, you really don't have anything to worry about. Like the others said, change the filter, fill it with diesel and go.

Hi Dan,

Think about this for a minute. Both gas and diesel come from the same source, crude oil, so there very compatible with each other.

Even on the newer diesel engines, gasoline content would have to well exceed 5% to become a concern.

If ever in doubt, add a gallon of any type of new vegie oil (cooking oil) and that will add all the needed luberication properties that are needed.

If it is dry now, I wouldn't waste time, money and energy sloshing around and draining any diesel. Just change filter and go with it. If you were to do this and fill with 80-100 gal. of diesel the resulting "contamination" would be so small percentage wise that it is of no consequence. IMHO. HTH.
