Power to metal bldg help...

Hey folks, I finally have reached the goal of having a metal bldg erected (30x50x12), slab is done and bldg should arrive mid-June. What I need to know is ideas for getting elect. power to the inside of the bldg? I want to have a 200 amp service, don't need all of that now, but don't want to get caught short later. I am a member of Rural Elect. Co-op and they want $300 for underground line and no charge for running overhead to a meter pole. Either way I will be adding a second meter to my account. In pouring the slab I made no provision for conduit/wire to come up through slab. Any advice/suggestions/comments are welcome. Thanks in advance. Logan

Is there any way to avoid the second meter? My co-op charges a $15 per month "basic fee" for every meter they provide. That adds up to quite a bit of money over the years.

My place is set up with one meter. I bought a meter base that allows a second 200 amp breaker to send power to the outbuildings.

I like to use the plastic conduit. It is fairly inexpensive and easy to work with and protects the wiring from most perils. It is fairly hard digging in my rocky soil and I don't like to dig more than once. When I dig a ditch, I put in conduit for the power and another, smaller conduit for the phone line and coax and other low voltage needs. I don't know what the code would say about this scheme, but it works fine and I have not had to dig up anything yet. I also have run waterlines in the same ditches.

Whatever you do, you want to have a good ground at your building. If you have underground metal waterpiping, that works very well for a ground. Otherwise, you need to do ground rods. Check with your inspector about just what you need. Good luck, congratulations on your new building!

If the power co. is willing to do the whole job for you for $300, it's money well spent. pretty sure I paid all of that and then some for mine. like the other guy said, throw a phone line and that other stuff in there while you're at it. much easier now than later. one thing, they originally were setting me up with a demand meter, and then called and asked if I wanted it on the same bill as the house. said it would save a lot of money in not having to pay two minimums each month. might want to check that out in your area.

Yep, what he said. BUT make sure you dig down at least 18 inches. 2" conduit should do it but check with an electrician or buy one of those little books that has the rules in it. I think 2" is good up to 200 amps but I ain't swearing to nothin'

It's really a snap; the hardest part is digging the dang trench! use those big pre-formed elbows where the conduit runs into the ground, and if you need a little more (or less) bend, you can use a heat gun to CAREFULLY warm the conduit until it's soft enough to bend. The pros use a box with an infrared heater, but a heatgun will work if you keep it moving and have patience.

You are not allowed to run water and electric in the same trench, so be prepared for that. Natural gas has another set of rules too, so if you're doing that check with a plumber as well. If you think you'll ever want additional utilities like phone or cable TV or an alarm system, run another small conduit alongside the large electrical conduit. 1" is plenty for all those little low-voltage wires. That'll reduce the likelihood of crosstalk between the power and communications wires. And you can feed all that stuff yourself later, so adding the conduit while the trench is there could save you a ton of hassle later.

If your going to go the underground route I would strongly recomend going ahead and putting in the other (smaller) conduit and pulling a phone, CATV, and possibly even a either net cable (limited to 328' run before having to put a hub or switch in line) and what ever else you might think of, you might use them right away, or never use them at all but at least you don't have to fight pulling a cable through a conduit at a later date.

I went underground and came up right on the outside of the building just under the new box on the inside. Then through the side of the building and up to the box. Like you do for most houses and other buildings. You will need schedule 80 and the 90 degree boxes. Also will need a slip joint at ground level. The guys at the power company were great help in what I needed and the electrical inspector ok"d everything.

Pitalplace, doesn't your service go thru a meter on the outside of the building, then thru the wall to the main breaker? That's what I expect to have on my metal building. You're right about schedule 80 long sweep 90� for exterior run up out of the trench. The trench run can be schedule 40 conduit. Here (Ca) it's 3" diameter for 200 amp service. Last time I checked the power co. wanted $1200 to drop down the pole and run 150' in my conduit. $300 is a steal.
