Bucket on back hoe missing a tooth. Where do I go to get a new one and what is the proper way to weld it on. Is a good welding machine required or will my cracker box do the job? What rods etc?

Years ago, when I was running a backhoe for a living I used to tear off a tooth, shank and all digging conctete-treated-baserock or trying to bust granite layered rock. Yeah, I know, where was the jackhammer? Anyhow I always cleaned all the old weld off with a disc grinder, then used LH-70 type rod to replace the shank. You've got to have machine enough to burn the rod really in and the nearer you get to perfect fillets the stronger the weld will be. If your cracker-box is powerful enough it should work.

Hi Leon, Are you talking about the tooth point or shank? Shanks are welded to the bucket and provide a mounting for replaceable tooth points. Tooth points are generally secured on the shank with a wedge shaped locking device or by peening.

What kind of backhoe? How are the other teeth held on?
