Rain getting in Metalbestos Chimney

Every time it rains hard and strong winds I get water inside the metalbestos chimney. Comes down inside pipe and into hot air furnace in shop and out on floor. I have a cap on it and even install a spark arrestor on the cap. I called the factory and had never heard of this problem. I was thinking of adding a section on top to get pipe above roof ridge. Also thought of putting a tee in pipe over furnace to catch the water. anyone had this problem. thanks

FWIW: I was always told by chimney/stove people that if your chimney wasn't above your roofline you chanced getting smoked in windy periods (vortices, swirls, etc) but if you don't get smoke it's hard to see how the same would blow water in but not smoke...

It's more common of a problem than you think. Most people don't realize it until it's to late. Yes , you should have a "T" at the bottom of your stove / chimney pipe if possible. Also a bigger diameter chimney cap. A chimney cap overhanging 8 inches or so beyond the chimney should work good. About a 4 - 5 inch gap between top of chimney and bottom of cap. Copper is good cap material. It doesn't seam to vibrate in the wind like other material. Copper also holds up very well against corrosion.

Yep. We have it on a big gas water heater at work and have the same trouble. When it rains hard and the winds blowing it comes down and leaks out through an elbow. Fortunately its over the shop sink so we just let it leak.

Ive got the same problem with a wood stove chimney,the larger cap is worth a try.
