Lifting slings

Which would be better suited for lifting steel I beams, eye & eye or endless slings? I am planning to assemble rafters and uprights on the concrete pad and lifting as a single unit, then fastening the assembly to the anchor bolts. The width of the assembly is 42', 16' at the eves, 21' peak and a pitch of 3 in 12. I'll use a stretcher of about 15' with two end slings and one in the center. The fork lift has a 33' reach.
Or is this not a good idea?

Slowpoke, I am no expert but I do have quiet a bit of construction experience. I think that it is reccommended to use steel wire chokers when lifting metal beams. Nylon slings/chokers can be cut by the metal beams, causing premature failure.
Always use "choke" method, passing one eye through the other, as cradling method will allow load to shift and fall. HTH.

Hey Slowpoke, in your case I don't think it's really gonna matter one way or the other. If you were picking a single, straight beam I'd say definately use a endless loop in a choker configuration instead of an eye-n-eye choked. With the endless loop you've got two points of contact, therefore more surface area touching, between the sling and the beam. This tends to make it easier to center because you can sorta straddle the center with the two parts of the sling, as well as making it less likely to slip because of the increased surface area in contact between the sling and the beam. In the pick your making you said your using a spreader with a sling at each end and in the middle, so the load slipping should never be an issue. Then again if your sling is gonna be going down to the beam at an angle from the end of the spreader then an endless loop would be the way to go, at least for the ones on the ends, for the same reason I said above, it's less likely to slip. Neither sling configuration is all that hard to get loose from a choke hold so that's not a concern either. Basically it sounds to me like you can use whichever you've got without any problems, as long as it's rated for the load your picking. Good luck and be careful.
