Can you replace o-rings in cutting and welding/brazing tourches with o-rings from the hardware store; do they need to be made from a special matieral?

How about if you were using propane?

Thanks Stan and Ross,

Since Ross didn't catch on fire or blow up after 25 years, I suppose it will be worth a try next time I need to replace the o-rings.

I also suppose I would never use propane with the welding tips. I am considering trying a propane tip for cutting though - I am aware that you need special tips at least.

Regards,
Tim

All I can add is that I had an o-ring go bad on my Craftsman torch probably 25 or more years ago. I went to Sears parts and was told I couldn't get the ring, just the whole torch (!!!). I said no thanks, got a ring for a dime at a hardware store, and it's still going today with no problems.

Hi Tim,

Propane is a solvent for rubber. When you use propane instead of acetylene, you're suposed to use type T hose (though opinions vary.) O-rings are probably more often neoprene than rubber but it would probably be a good idea to research it a bit if you're going to use propane. You do need a different tip with propane, you know. With some brands of equipment you are supposed to be able to change nothing but the tip; with others you need a completely different torch body as well as a different tip.

All the best, Stan

I don't believe so but any welding supply shop could answer that for you and also offer a rebuilding service hope it helps.

Thanks JB - the reason I ask is I had to replace tiny little o-rings on one of my welding tips - my welding supplier charged about $3.00 each for these little things. I would like to just go to Home Chepo or equivalent and pay $0.30 instead. Gas welding equipment seems to cost an awful lot and everythink needs to be order. I just thing so few people are doing it, that nobody stocks anything.

As for having them rebuild - I don't think I could afford it (see discusstion above).

As for them telling me "sure it is ok, just go by the cheap stuff" - first they would not know if it was OK or not (they are retailers, not welders) and secondly, they wouldn't do it because they want the $3.00 each for tiny little o-rings.
