Phone wiring protocol

Our phone company uses red/green for line 1, yellow/black for line 2, and so on.

On line 2, is the yellow wire the "red substitute" or the "green substitute" ?

Can I check an unknown pair with a VOM to determine tip and ring?

With a DC voltmeter you should see approx. 48 volts "talk battery" on each pair coming from the Telco central office. You can compare a known good pair with an unknown one. I don't remember which way the polarity is but I think tip is positive.

Tip is positive and ring is negative. Tip is grounded at the central office. Pair 1 tip - green ring - red
Pair 2 tip - Black ring - yellow

Green & black are tips, red & yellow are rings. With most modern, electronic phones tip and ring don't matter anymore. Party line phones are a different story.

Red, green, yellow, black, Or RGBY wire. If you are trying to run two dial tones over RGBY there is a good possiblity of Crosstalk between the pairs ( ie Phone on rg , computer or fax on yb,). I have had crosstalk happen over as little as 5 ft of rgby wire. The rgby wire was not designed for two dial tones. You may have to upgrade your wire at least cat 3. Cat three wire is twisted as are the telco service drops, cables, cross connects, and frame wire, this is all done to eliminate crosstalk on the network.

With cat 3 and above white/blue is tip, Blue is ring, orange/white is tip and orange is ring.
