Looking at a shop press, what do you guys think?

Looking at a very old shop press down the road from me. Thinkin its around 50 ton or so. Its one of those "screw types". I've never used one, just the hydraulic ones. I would just use it at my house, doing misc press jobs...tractor parts, car wheel bearings etc. Looking for any advice on this type of press, I think its from the 20's or 30's and weighs roughly 1000lbs. He wants $200 for it, is this reasonable? Thanks again guys.

Well Mike, if you don't want it, I am definitely interested and I am located near Ithaca NY. They are very good. You will not make a mistake with one due to the controlability (as stated by another poster). May be over kill for what we would need it for, but...

Mike,
Did you see my post wanting one of those? I haven't even seen one in 30 yrs or more and have been looking for one for more than 10 years. The ones I've used were very good. The ram was very steady. Of course they were good quality and the hydraulic presses I've used are cheapies. I would say it would be way WAY better than a $200.00 hydraulic. I would buy it in a hart beat if it was as close to me as it was to you.

A screw press is much safer & accurate than a hydraulic one, IMHO... There is no way, today, that a screw press could be built & sold , at a profit. These new, cheap hydraulic preeses are dangerous. A friend was nearly killed by one, recently. Due to the play in the press, the work jumped out & hit him. He had severe damage to internal organs. Thankfully, he recovered. As long as the screw press is in good shape, I would buy it... Sounds like a great deal...
