Need book Hobart 200 Amp With 4 cyl Hercules Just got an old (1950 maybe) Hobart Simplified 200 Amp arc welder Specs 983. It is powered by 4 Cylinder Hercules engine. It is 6 volt system. Would like to get book on this unit. Or if no one has book but has machine, would like to get information from you.

I have a 1939 Lincoln SA-200 Welder with Hercules IXB5 4 cyl engine. It's been a good engine, I bought a rebuild kit and rings and bought a couple like it for parts and got it working good. When I got it, it had a water pump, but it didn't work and good luck getting parts, it had a shaft coming out from the front with water pump on it and it also drives the magneto. I put a pulley with v-belt drive, and made a mount and mounted a waterpump housing from a mazda rx-7 engine I had laying around, plumbed everything in and drove the water pump from the shaft with the belt, works great and radiator is warm throughout instead of having hot spots like before. They had run the hoses through direct from engine to radiator and depened on the natural flow of water caused by heat. My pump add-on made things alot better for the engine and there is a place to add another pulley and drive a alternator or possibly a air compressor with a clutch to run air driven power tools. Right now I need to clean the carb and get it running, need to do some welding soon....great little machine.

I seem to remember an ad for Hercules engine parts in Antique Power magazine. You might contact the publisher for info unless someone can give you the ad address/phone. Do a Google search, too. I have a ZXA on an old Delco light plant, but I've never seen that model listed anywhere.

Thanks for answering post. The engine is a Hercules Model IXB5 and sounds like it has bad bearings or crankshaft. It had about 20 PSI oil pressure. I need engine crankshaft dimensions and engine torques. Will have to pull pan and check further. I haven't got to try welder yet. Does it have to be polarized if it sat for a long time? If so, how?

Thats a new one on me...I thought Hobarts were Willys powered [ Jeep flathead ] I've had 5 Hobarts , and none were Herc powered..1st was Willys , 2nd was Wisconsin , 3rd was Wisconsin , 4th was Ford 6 cyl , 5th and last is Willys..What did you need to know about the welder?? If you need to get the generator to charge...Fogetabotit..I have had the best luck with 1 wire Delco alternator..last forever..can't be beat..Easy to change over to 12 volts..

You need info on the engine or info on the welder?? I might be able to help some if you need info on the engine. Also do you know what engine model it is
