FWIW- I've run the "generic" brand oils quite a lot. Wal-mart, TSC, CT back when they were around. My FIL used to run a drug store brand that stayed at $.75 a quart, in cardboard cans, long after everyone else went to plastic and $1.50 a quart. Often I can't get Rotella or Castrol as it gets sold out quick on sale. So I use the cheap stuff. I figure new clean cheap oil is way better than dirty or no oil. I just try to remember to make my next change on time and not push things. In my various farm tractors I've run the cheap oil for years without problems. Some of them eat oil anyway and Rotellas too dear to waste like that. I do stick with name brand 2 cycle oils as I really think theres a difference after wrenching on Huskys for a few years.

I would also note that my "real " job has a fleet of over 2500 vehicles. The oil supplied is the low bid, recycled oil. We've never, ever had an engine go due to an oil problem that I've heard of in 19 years. And these vehicles idle a lot and then go to 100 mph plus (police cars). Mind you the maintainece is set in stone and DOES get done or someone gets in very hot water. They run to 150,000 or more on some cars and oil isn't a problem.

If it has an API logo, you are good to go. Otherwise it is the low bidder. The bottle will say that it is packaged by someone.

As long as the oil meets current API quality standards, I wouldn't worry *too* much...
