Light flashing on Crown Victoria

First let me say I know this is off topic from tools. I have saw probably more post about things other than tools than about them. This has really been a useful place to find all kinds of info. Apparently it is OK to post about other than tools.

Now to my off topic question.

I bought a 2002 Crown Victoria late yesterday and got it home after dark. There is a red light flashing on top of the dash near the vin#. This light flashes when you remove the key. When you put the key in and turn on the ignition, it goes out. I have read in the book and it talks about a theft prevention and a flashing light. I'm not sure this light is the one it's talking about. According to the book I think it is supposed to work that way. However common since tells me it shouldn't be flashing all the time the car is parked. Can anyone tell me about this?

Should have said "Need to move on to find easier targets" I guess that flashing light does scare off some potential thieves...

FWIW: One thing should be remembered about computerised units: there's a very small but steady power drain by the computer (I wonder if it dreams?). Anyhow, we can't let one sit for three-four weeks and expect the battery to be up like in a breaker-point ignition car, and they're all different, depending on how many sensors, etc., and how close to optimum they're operating. It's a good idea, if one sits, to fire it up at least once a week.

U don't know about the CrownVic., but the smaller Fords have the same system, and the light flashes any time the ignition is off. It's a reminder the P.A.T. (passive anti theft) system is active. The light is an LED, and draws such a smalll amount of current that the battery discharges faster form shelf life type discharge than from the light. One note, they keys are special. Walmart, etc. can't cut new ones for you. they have a chip in them that the car computer has to recognize before the ignition will work.
