It seems lately nearly every time I start the computer, there's a screen wanting me to get RealPlayer. What is it and why do I need it? Would it make any difference that I'm on dial up (I'm too far from the central office)?

Download this little program and run it.
I use this and recommend it. I even keep it on my website for easy downloading.
When you first run it, it will show a screen with a bunch of tabs at the top.
Click on each tab, and uncheck things that you don"t want
to run every time you turn on your computer.
Real Player is started running when you turn on your computer.
So uncheck anything related to Real Player.
There are much better players out there that are free
and they don"t contain any malware like RP does.
Just run this program I am giving you and it will fix this problem.

Adware, scumware, or worse spyware, you may have them all. Most computers are loaded with them if you have been on the net. Get a Removel program an run it. Spyware Doctor by PC tools Software is a very good one. Download it for a free trial of the net.

Instead of buying a program to get rid of the malware, download and install LavaSoft Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy. They're both free.

Real Player is a multimedia player that plays video and audio files like movie clips, (.wmv or .avi files) and voice or music clips.

You don't NEED it, as Windows has it's own software to provide those functions. Some people prefer RP over the Windows version.

Without seeing the popup, I can't advise you on how to make it go away.

My audio doesn't work and I seldom want to watch video. I believe RealPlayer has been on the computer for a long time, but never used. Now on start up it presents a billboard of about 30% of the screen. A click on the "no thanks" does away with it till next time. I already have SpyBot Search & Destroy and AdAware which I run frequently. Also Norton Internet Security, 2005.

Anyway, it looks like I'll have to start my own bank because I'm winning 2 lotteries a day and get multiple offers to help get millions in cash out of foreign countries and the hands of greedy government officials. I never realized how important I am. And handsome, too. It's getting too much to handle. Maybe you would like to help. But to prove you are trustworthy, just send $5000 in cash or money order (no personal checks please). And keep this offer a secret as too many others will try to take advantage of the situation.

RealPlayer is what is called 'nagware'. Somehow you got the free version installed on your computer and it now wants you to buy the commercial version. As Fawteen said, you don't NEED it. There are much better media players out there. Unistall RealPlayer and the pop-ups will go away. If you find you have files that do need RealPlayer, download and install Real Alternative. It's free. It works.
