Gentlemen,
If I may have a moment of your time. I am in need of an air compressor. I plan on using the compressor to run a variety of air tools, impact wrench, nail guns and once in a while a DA sander. I am looking at a Craftsman 25 gal. Air Compressor, 2 hp, Horizontal Tank Sears item #00919541000 Mfr. model #19541

I have managed to save about $375.00 for this purchase. Will this model fill my needs and be durable? Or, should I wait until I have saved a few more dollars and purchase a larger/different model?

Thanks!

Home Depot usually had 5 HP compressors for around $400. Might get a bigger one on sale for about that.

Watch Craigslist.org. If there is one for your area, there are often great buys there. & if you have something to sell, ads are free.

I'm selling a devilbiss 20 gallon, 5 hp, oiless. 6.8 CFM /
90 psi for $150 right now. I bought a bigger one and just don't need the smaller one anymore. It works well but it takes quite a compressor to keep up with an orbital sander. I'm in N.E. Ohio if you're interested

Aso keep in mind that most single stage pumps have a 50% duty cycle. Ten minutes working, ten minutes rest. Kinda like me.

Thanks again for your comments. I think I will continue to save my pennies and purchase a larger compressor.

based on your list IF you switch to a electric random orbital sander. THEN a pancake unit would be better with the compressor size you mentioned and will cost enough less to buy. leaving enough for the random orbit sander too.
good luck

2 hp is way too small. When the 25 gal tank pressure drops to cut in pressure, I doubt if you will stop work and wait for it to fill up again. And it will seem like forever to get the pressure back to 90+ lbs. Look for a good used compressor that has an 80 gal tank 6hp, and 15+ cu ft/min @100+ psi. A compressor that has those specs or better will be a commercial unit. Check newspaper ads for machine and auto shops that are going out of business. Ask to have it run. Expect to pay $500-$800. Just my 4.

IMHO, you need to save a little longer and buy something bigger. You can run almost everything you mentioned with that compressor, until you get to that DA sander. You will need a minimum of 10 CFM at 90 PSI for the sander, possibly more. If possible, go bigger in the first place. If not, get something smaller but don"t expect any miracles. Rule of thumg. Look at the demad for the tool, if new it will always show the air consumption. Then look at the compressor, it too will tell you what it put"s out. Don"t be fooled by the CFM at 40 PSI though, many of your tools will show the need at 90 PSI. Also, if your going electic go 220 volts, cast iron dual cylinder and you will happy for a long long time. Oiless is noisy, and normally has a short life span. As has been true for many years, you get what you pay for.
Good luck!

We have an old Craftsman air compressor. Close to 30 years old.
Similar to what you described. 5hp horizontal tank.
I rebuilt the compressor head about 5 years ago.
Don"t think it had ever had the oil changed in it.
Finally threw a rod. Crankshaft was wore out.
I rebuilt it and it was like new again.
I expect to get another 30 years out of it.
Hope Sears still has replacement parts then.
Or maybe this time around somebody will keep the oil changed.

yeah a da sander uses alot of volume of air, dont think that little compressor would run it long at all.

Spray guns, dual action sanders and sand blasters use a lot of air. If that is what you really need then look for a minimum of 12CFM @ 90 PSI. It will be more expensive than your $375 but if needed then that is what you must buy. Also look for an oil bath, cast iron compressor as the oiless are VERY noisy.

My guess is that you need something easily portable. The size you mentioned should be about right.
